Municipal authority making headway in leak detection

The Ridgway Township Municipal Authority has continued to make headway in detecting water loss during the month of January.
Overall, accountability levels reached 85 percent, equating to a total loss of 606,970 gallons and a total of $3,151 paid to the borough for lost water.

George P. Gasbarre, 92, of 39936 State St., Ridgway, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, Feb. 6, 2014 at the home of his son Joseph in Ridgway.
He was born March 17, 1921 in Ridgway, son of the late Louis and Columbia (Sidoni) Gasbarre.
He married Philomena Nellie A. Mann on May 28, 1946, she preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 1998.
He had resided in Ridgway all of his life and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, the K of C where he was a 4th Degree in the St. Marys Assembly, was a past Grand Knight of the Frank Servidia Council, and was a life member of the Ridgway Moose.

Case against driver in 6-fatality crash heads to court

KANE – The criminal case against a Kane woman linked with a horrific six-fatality crash Aug. 31 is headed to McKean County Court.
Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman "bound over" the charges to county court Wednesday following an intense three-hour preliminary hearing in his courtroom.
Kathy S. Douglas, 37, faces 35 charges-- including 15 felonies-- in connection with the Route 219 wreck that killed her 12-year-old daughter, Olivia, her 6-year-old nephew Jarrett Costanzo of Kane, and four members of a St. Marys family.

Jackknifed tractor-trailer disrupts traffic

WETMORE TWP. – A jackknifed tractor-trailer disrupted traffic for more than two hours Wednesday afternoon on state Route 66 near the base of James City hill south of Kane.
According to the Kane-based state police, at approximately 1:46 p.m., a 2007 Peterbilt 379 tractor-trailer hauling a load of plywood on a flatbed trailer lost control while traveling southbound and attempting a left curve in SR 66.

Bonita A. “Bonnie” Morelli

Bonita A. “Bonnie” Morelli, 59, of 346 South Kersey Rd., Kersey, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at her home after a long and valiant fight with cancer.
She was born July 16, 1954 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Silvio and Onorina DeCecchis Cesa. She was a lifelong resident of the area, was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1972, and was a 1980 graduate of Jeff Tech Nursing School. She had been an employee of Sylvania, Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital, the Ridgway Hospital, the former Family Planning Center in Ridgway, and was a nurse for the St. Marys Area School District.

ECCOTA gala offers evening of entertainment

The Elk County Council on the Arts, better known as ECCOTA, is kicking off its 30th anniversary with their upcoming Annual Gala, set for Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at Aiello's Cafe in Ridgway complete with a Dueling Piano show, a dueling artist event, prize drawing, new dessert auction and an award presentation.
"They are a blast. They're very entertaining and fun," Abbi Peters, ECCOTA executive director said of the returning piano tandem. "We will be doing other activities at the gala as this is our largest fundraiser of the year."

Partnership to create more job opportunities

With the support of a $150,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development's Discovered in PA, Developed in PA grant program (D2PA), the Community Education Council (CEC) has partnered up with the region's chambers of commerce, the North Central Workforce Investment Board, and local schools and employers.

Courthouse to have single point of entry March 1

The Elk County Courthouse will have a single point of entry starting March 1.
The commissioners reported on Tuesday that the only entrance available for use, which also is handicap-accessible, will be the courthouse behind the building and in front of the Elk County Prison.

Edith Marie DeStefano, 94, of Savoy, Ill., formerly of Williamsport, died at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014 at Carle Hospital, Urbana. She was surrounded by her family and devoted caregivers.
Edith was born Feb. 25, 1919 in Kersey daughter of Benjaminio and Erminia Morelli Carlini. She married John Angelo DeStefano on Nov. 25, 1948 in Ridgway.

A pressing defense helped Johnsonburg girls basketball overcome a halftime deficit and take a 35-26 victory over Ridgway Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
