Borough continues work on condemned houses

The borough of Ridgway has been busy taking on the task of purchasing condemned homes around the borough, and has recently purchased three homes, two located along North Broad Street and one on Clarion Avenue, for the purpose of razing them.

MARYS – Following the recent announcement of the closing of St. Joseph Monastery in St. Marys current and former area residents have voiced their reaction to the news, a majority of which are of sadness and disappointment paired with fond memories of The Benedictine Sisters of Elk County and their contributions to the community.

Port Allegany wrestling doubles up Johnsonburg Rams, 48-24

JOHNSONBURG – Port Allegany wrestling doubled up Johnsonburg 48-24 in a dual meet held Wednesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Although both teams won three matches on the mat, the Gators used five forfeits to take the edge in Wednesday's dual.

School board shares information on student performance

During their regular school board meeting Tuesday evening, Ridgway Area High School principal Heather McMahon-Vargas offered updates on the latest academic committee findings. The committee has been working on issuing surveys to middle and high school faculty in order to take a closer look at their thoughts concerning opportunities for student development.

Convent closing imminent

ST. MARYS – After three years of prayerful study the Benedictine Sisters of Elk County agreed to move forward with plans to close St. Joseph Monastery in St. Marys.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday afternoon, this decision was made on Monday.
As the work of closing moves forward not all the questions have been answered and much work remains.

Ridgway downs DuBois Central Catholic in AML South matchup

After DuBois Central Catholic downed Johnsonburg last Friday, the Cardinals (7-4) couldn't make it two big wins in a row as Ridgway won 49-41 over DCC Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
"DCC coming off that big win against Johnsonburg, they had the setback against Curwensville but we knew they were playing well," Ridgway coach Anthony Allegretto said. "We know how much they hustle, how much they work. We knew how well-coached they are. They shut down our offense by packing in the middle, and we have to hit some shots. In the early going, we had some trouble."

Rams have no trouble with Brockway in 79-48 rout

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams (13-2) had four players in double-digits Tuesday as they scored a runaway 79-48 win against visiting Brockway (3-9).
The Rams were led by seniors Cameron Grumley and Cole Peterson, scoring 27 and 21 points, respectively, followed by junior Zane Hodgdon with 11 points and sophomore Kevin Benson with 10 points.

15th annual Rendezvous upcoming

The Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous, now in its 15th year, will run from Saturday, Feb. 22 to Saturday, March 1, and event organizers Liz and Rick Boni are anticipating its arrival.

Recycling program poised to resume

The Ridgway Borough's recycling contract with Elk Waste Services, in its third round of being amended, is reportedly likely to be signed within the coming days. The original contract, which put forth several new provisions, including the request that Elk Waste provide numbers of homes recycling as well as dollar amounts for revenue made from the sale of borough recyclables, was rejected by Elk Waste.

Blood drive Wednesday in Ridgway

Three blood drives, including one in St. Marys, were cancelled last Tuesday due to weather conditions, worsening the blood shortage already plaguing the Community Blood Bank.
Hoping to make up for the cancellations, there will be a blood drive Wednesday, Jan. 15 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Elk County Courthouse Annex.
