Federal court grants postponement in Smith kidnapping, carjacking trial

WILLIAMSPORT – Federal public defenders for an Emporium man charged with the August 2012 carjacking of a bank employee at gunpoint have succeeded in once again postponing the trial, this time citing the adverse impacts of federal budget sequestration cuts on their legal practice.

JOHNSONBURG – In the early morning hours of April 27, two young children were found wandering through the streets of Johnsonburg, without shoes and wearing little clothing in temperatures below 40 degrees.

Sarah T. Nappe, 90. of 17 Penn Ave., Ridgway, died Wednesday, May 1, 2013.
She was born January 21, 1923, in Brockway, the daughter of the late Ben and Sara Bonavita Aquilino.
On June 7, 1947, she married Alfonso M. Nappe, he preceded her in death on July 6, 2009.
Mrs. Nappe was a long time Ridgway resident. She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church., C.D. of A. and the Contessa Lodge of the Sons of Italy. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking and reading. She also enjoyed her family and friends, especially the extended family of Sam and Rose Delhunty.

Alfred N. “Al” Dempsey

Alfred N. “Al” Dempsey, 61, of 453 Toby Road, Kersey, died Wednesday evening, May 1, 2013, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born October 29, 1951 in Franklin, son of the late Alfred and Alice “Lettie Jean” Neal Dempsey.
On September 2, 1972 in the St. Mary’s Church in Reynoldsville, he married Bonnie J. Pegnetter, who survives.
Mr. Dempsey had been a resident of the area since 1975. He was a graduate of Punxsutawney High School, Class of 1971 and graduated from Vo Tech in Reynoldsville in 1971. He was an employee of SGL in St. Marys for 33 years.

Elker baseball downs ECC

Ridgway starter Austin Amacher did his part against his former teammates to help the Elkers stay in the game.
The bats did their part in the sixth inning.
A 3-run sixth inning was enough to give Ridgway baseball a 3-1 win over Elk County Catholic Tuesday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
