Store owners charged with trafficking synthetic drugs

CLEARFIELD CO. – Shortly after Pennsylvania criminalized the sale and possession of synthetic pot in August of 2011, two Clearfield convenience store owners were charged with drug trafficking after reportedly selling the newly-banned substance to undercover state troopers.

Benninger wins silver medal in triple jump

SHIPPENSBURG – Johnsonburg triple jumper Gabbi Benninger finished a co-silver medalist for Johnsonburg track and field after completion of the second day of the PIAA Track and Field Championships Saturday at Shippensburg University.
Benninger tied for second with her jump of 36-9.5. Kayla Caruso of Montoursville also jumped 36-9.5. Lanae Newsome of Brookville won the state championship in triple jump with her mark of 39-6.75. Newsome is the state record-holder in triple jump with her mark of 40-3.5 set last year at the state meet. Newsome will be graduating this year.

Student speakers share advice at ECCHS commencement

ST. MARYS – The ideas of not being deterred by fears and doubts and working hard to achieve one’s goals were some of the messages Elk County Catholic High School’s 66 new graduates were able to take away from Sunday afternoon’s commencement exercises. This advice was given to the graduates by their peers: valedictorian Morgan Onink and salutatorian Daniel Millsop.

Richard Marcel Smith, 77, of Bridge Street, Johnsonburg, died suddenly at home Friday, May 24, 2013.
He was born on Dec. 30, 1935 in Kane, the son of Dewey Marcel and Linda Wilhelmina (Anderson) Smith. A Johnsonburg resident, he graduated from Wilcox Area High School and Penn State University, with both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree.
On June 14, 1958, he married Gwendolyn Preston Smith, who passed away March 28, 2010.

Motorcycle safety classes now offered in St. Marys

ST. MARYS – Motorcycle enthusiasts now have the option of taking the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program's Basic Rider Course (BRC) and Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2) in St. Marys as Elk County Catholic High School was recently added to the list of the state's training sites. There is no cost for the program, and motorcycles and helmets are provided for those enrolled in the BRC.

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys man is imprisoned for allegedly pulling a gun on police after leading them on a high speed chase while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Financial woes facing North Central

The North Central Regional Planning Development Commission is holding just over $5 million in total assets, a nearly $2 million dollar drop from last year, with expenses over $7 million and liabilities over $6 million. This according to a state audit of the organization's financial records dated March 22.
