Ridgway boys basketball defeats Curwensville

A strong second quarter spurred Ridgway boys basketball on to a 46-25 victory Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Curwensville led 10-6 over Ridgway at the end of the first quarter. Neither team did much on offense in the first four minutes of the second quarter as Ridgway mustered four points and Curwensville was shut out to leave the score tied at 10-all with 3:52 left. A MacDonald field goal with 5:04 left broke a 7:26 scoring drought for Ridgway and two free throws from Jeremy Breier tied the game at 10.

Faircroft Bed and Breakfast to close its doors

Faircroft Bed and Breakfast, operated by Bill and Annie Seely of Ridgway, will be closing its doors come the end of the year. The Seelys reopened the establishment in June of 2005 after it had been sold by its previous owners, John and Lois Shoemaker, who operated Faircroft from 1987 to 2001.

66th Lucia Festival this Sunday

Swedish traditions will come alive on Sunday, Dec. 15 when the 66th Lucia Festival will be held at 4 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at the corner of South and South Broad Streets in Ridgway.

Beverly Klancer Sette

Beverly Klancer Sette, 77, of 178 Evers Ave., St. Marys, died at her residence on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, after a lengthy illness.
She was born May 14, 1936 in Gowanda, N.Y., daughter of the late Rudolph and Josephine “Pep” Kordon Klancer Sr. On May 4, 1957 in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Dominick “Nick” Sette who preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 2011.

Lady Crusaders defeat Ramettes

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders improved to 3-0 on the young season with a 62-31 victory over the visiting Johnsonburg Ramettes on Wednesday evening at ECCHS.
"We played a pretty good game tonight after playing pretty poorly against Kane (on Monday)," said ECCHS head coach Ken Pistner. "We started off a little slow again, but I thought our defensive pressure was really good and our rebounding was good tonight."
ECC led 15-7 after the first quarter, 31-18 at the half, and 43-24 after three.

Lady Elkers fall to Lady Gators

Ridgway girls basketball lost 55-4 to Port Allegany Wednesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway opened the game with the lead as Kiersten Hinton would score on a layup just 11 seconds in to give Ridgway a 2-0 lead.
Port Allegany would take the lead for good a minute later. After a free throw, Becca Lathrop would nail two free throws of her own to give the Lady Gators a 3-2 lead. Port Allegany would score 15 unanswered points in the first quarter before Ridgway's Elizabeth Kemick added a bucket in the pain with 1:04 left in the first quarter.

Retaining wall issues addressed

JOHNSONBURG – Visibility issues are being addressed in Johnsonburg as the top 10 inches of the retaining wall running parallel to state Route 219 at the Main Street intersection will be leveled off.

VFW donates to area organizations

During the month of November, the VFW Post 5887 in Ridgway has made over $50,000 in donations to countless area organizations. The club typically picks a few organizations to contribute to over a three month period, but found themselves with more funds than usual for the month and took the opportunity to go above and beyond for the Holiday season.

Rams down Elk County Catholic for 10th straight time

JOHNSONBURG – Some of the players were different Tuesday night but the result was still the same for the Johnsonburg Rams.
Fueled by two 24-point performances from seniors Cameron Grumley and Cole Peterson, the Rams registered their 10th straight win over visiting Elk County Catholic, 63-58.

Ridgway wrestling loses home opener to Brockway

Brockway wrestling won 35-27 over Ridgway Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School in the home opener for the Elkers.
Brockway won six of the nine matches wrestled on the mat. The Rovers received two forfeits while the Elkers received one. Two weights had no match.
