Kane boy, cousin among 6 killed in Rt. 219 crash

HAMLIN TWP. – Six-year-old Jarrett Costanzo idolized his older brothers Angelo and Jacob and looked forward to the day that he, too, could play youth football.
Meanwhile, he was happy to be on the sidelines as the spirited "water boy."
His 12-year-old cousin Olivia Douglas, a Kane native who lived with her father in Eldred, was a vibrant young girl who was a cheerleader with the Little Nippers youth football program for Otto-Eldred. 

Hazel A. (Peachie) King

Hazel A. (Peachie) King, 87, of Monterey Avenue, Ridgway, died Friday evening, Aug. 30, 2013.
She was born in Ridgway on Nov. 3, 1925, daughter of the late Leo and Martha (Zurcher) Allinger.
She was married to Jack W. King who preceded her in death in July of 1973.
Mrs. King graduated from Ridgway High School in 1943, attended West Penn Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1946. She was employed as a private duty nurse for several years and worked at the Elk County General Hospital for many years, retiring in 1980.

6 dead in horrific car crash

HAMLIN TWP. – Six people were killed Saturday evening in a fatal two-car crash on state Route 219 at Mead Run Road in Hamlin Township, McKean County.
Kathy Douglas, age 36, of Kane, driving a 2005 Jeep Liberty, suffered serious injuries in the crash along with a 10-year-old juvenile. Two other juveniles, ages 12 and 6, died in the crash.
All four occupants in a second vehicle, a 2004 Pontiac Bonneville, died. They included Gary Beimel, age 62, Elaine Beimel, age 55, David Cuneo, age 54, and Florence Donachy, age 81, all of St. Marys.

Elkers down Otto-Eldred

JOHNSONBURG – Ridgway football's inaugural game in Johnsonburg had a big crowd, fireworks and an Elker victory at the end.
Ridgway won 20-8 over Otto-Eldred Friday night at Memorial Field in Johnsonburg in the 2013 season opener.
"What an atmosphere," Heindl said. "I can't [acknowledge] the people, the communities of both towns enough. What a show of support for these kids."

Working on Eagle Scout Merits

Devin Condon has completed a project for the Tri-County Rail Trail Association. Devin is a Boy Scout from Troop 93 working on his Eagle Scout Merits. He has completed one of his merit requirements as he organized a group of boys to clean up the entrance of the Clarion-Little Toby Rails to Trails entrance in Ridgway.

Ridgway boys golf downs Johnsonburg

Ridgway boys golf remained undefeated on the young season as the Elkers won 190-232 over Johnsonburg Thursday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Josh Roselli of Ridgway was the medalist for the Elkers as he finished with a 35 including an eagle on the par 5 fourth hole. Mitchell Gilmore finished with a 36 and Jake Klawuhn tallied a 38. Mitchell Stark carded a 40 which included a long birdie putt from just inside the fringe on the second hole. T.J. Schlimm finished with a 41 to round out the top five team scores.

CDBG money green-lighted for project

The replacement of old water lines in a portion of Wilcox will be partially funded by Community Development Block Grant [CDBG] monies following a public forum and approval at a board of commissioners meeting.

Pa. bridges worst in the country

Barry J. Schoch, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation [PennDOT] announced last week that officials will implement or expand weight restrictions to roughly 1,000 structurally deficient bridges statewide in an effort to guarantee bridge safety and preserve the aging bridge system.

Two-vehicle crash in Ridgway

There was a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon involving a white four-door truck and a white Comcast cargo van at the intersection of state Routes 219 and 948.
Specifics on the crash were unavailable at press time as the Ridgway-based state police had yet to file a public information report.
