ST. MARYS – St. Marys City Police Officer Gregg McManus said police officers are seeing a resurgence of narcotics, namely heroin, as crackdowns on prescription painkillers have succeeded in reducing their availability on the street.
Nellie H. Nitsche, 97, of the Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys, and formerly of Wilcox, died Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2012, at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
She was born October 15, 1915 in Brookston, daughter of the late Thomas and Josephine Szaidek Wantuck.
On November 23, 1938 in Holy Cross Church, Rasselas she married Frank J. Nitsche, and he preceded her in death July 16, 2003.
She resided in Wilcox most of her life. She had lived at Silver Creek Terrace for five years.

JOHNSONBURG – The preliminary hearing for a Johnsonburg man charged with the murder of a Ridgway teen, originally scheduled for this morning, has been postponed.
ERIE – A Ridgway man and his Johnsonburg codefendant charged with federal firearms violations have been granted additional time to prepare their legal defenses prior to trial in Federal Court.
JOHNSONBURG – Ken Spaich of Hazel Hurst has been selected as the "Logger-of-the-Year" by the Allegheny Hardwood Utilization Group (AHUG).
Ridgway resident and quilting enthusiast Jeanne Hall is working the job she always wanted, owner of Queenie's Quilting located along German Settlement Road.

The third man charged in the January 2011 knifepoint robbery of an elderly Johnsonburg man was in Elk County Court Monday where he pleaded guilty to his role in the home-invasion style attack.
Helen M. Powell, 90, of 221 Cook Ave., Ridgway, died Monday morning, April 1, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 30, 1922 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Maurice and Mary [Kielocker] MacDonald. She married Roland A. Powell on May 18, 1946, he preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 2009. She had resided in Ridgway since 2005 and was a former Silver Spring, Md. resident.
Sheri R. Greak, 66, of 815 Middletown Rd., Lake City, passed away Monday, April 1, 2013, at Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility, after a lengthy illness.
She was born June 6, 1946, in McKeesport, the daughter of Arthur B. and Ethel R. Snyder. She married Leonard G. Greak (PSP), he predeceased her on April 29, 2003. She graduated from Holy Ghost Academy, Mercy Hospital (Pittsburgh) and Hananaham (Philadelphia) with a degree in Nursing.

ST. MARYS – When the Frank and Paladino siblings decided to hold a 5k walk/run on the day before Easter three years ago, they simply wanted to honor the memories of their mothers, who had both died from brain aneurysms, and raise funds for The Brain Aneurysm Foundation. They did not realize at the time that they were also starting an event that would become a tradition for a number of area residents.
