ST. MARYS – Recent published reports indicate the Elk County Catholic School System is among 14 school districts in the region which have purchased a controversial beef product through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

Raymond "Gabby" Burkhardt, 74, of Export, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, following a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 21, 1938, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Francis and Grace (Kelly) Burkhardt.
Gabby was the epitome of life itself. He knew how to live and how to love. He was always busy with one of his projects or helping someone else. He loved to share his magic and delighted in the wonderment of it all. He made us all believe. His numerous stories and jokes could always light up a room. He would look forward to winter and the first snowfall so he could go snowmobiling.

School board discusses Keystone exams

During their regular meeting Tuesday evening, Dr. Michael O'Brien, superintendent of schools, discussed possible changes to standardized testing in Pennsylvania, particularly concerning the Keystone exams.

Kersey man shares tale of successful elk harvest

QUEHANNA – Kersey resident Ronald Wildfire was the lone Elk County resident drawn for a license in this year's elk hunt, and Wildfire was especially lucky in that he was one of 26 individuals selected for a bull tag. He successfully harvested a 6x6 bull elk in Elk Hunt Zone 5 last Wednesday.

WILCOX – During their regular meeting Monday evening, Jones Township Supervisors approved the advertising of the 2014 budget, which is reportedly expected to be approved during the December meeting.

Joseph M. Sorge

Joseph M. Sorge, 89, formerly of 268 Euclid Ave., Ridgway, died Monday morning, Nov. 11, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born Feb. 10, 1924 in Ridgway, son of the late Frank and Albina (Lupilo) Sorge. He married Kathleen M. Gerg on July 5, 1947 in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Kersey. She preceded him in death on April 25, 2009.

Shirley A. Lowdermilk

Shirley A. Lowdermilk, 84, of 110 Taylor Ave., Ridgway, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born July 10, 1929 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Donald (Bud) and Kathyrn N. (Leilous) Lowdermilk. She had resided in Ridgway all of her life and was a graduate of the Ridgway High School. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She had been employed by Quality Components for 30 years.

Labant continues to recover

ST. MARYS – Just over two years ago Staff Sgt. Michele Labant, 35, a native of St. Marys, was among five wounded and three killed during two IED attacks on the truck convoy which she was traveling in while deployed to Afghanistan.

George J. “Jit” Haupricht Jr.

George J. “Jit” Haupricht Jr., 82, of Dill Hill Road, Johnsonburg, died at home on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013 after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 13, 1931 in Toledo, Ohio, son of the late George J. and Helen (Pavlock) Haupricht.
On July 4, 1953, he married Kathryn (Shannon) and she survives.
A 1950 graduate of Johnsonburg High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force 3510th maintenance squadron from 1951-1953 being stationed in Sampson AFB, Lowry AFB, Mitchell AFB and Randolph AFB, and receiving the National Defense Service Medal.

Robert E. Herrmann

Robert E. Herrmann, 76, of 729 Long Level Rd., Ridgway, died unexpectedly at his residence on Thursday, Nov. 7.
He was born July 25, 1937 in Ridgway, the son of the late Robert F. and Helen Gerg Herrmann.
He was a lifelong Ridgway resident. Mr. Herrmann was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church. He was a graduate of Ridgway High School, Class of 1956. He had been employed at Keystone Carbon for 38 years. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force and was a Vietnam era veteran. He is survived by his brother, Richard L. Herrmann, and by a sister, Kathryn Herrmann.
