Curbside recycling program set to continue

J.R. Geitner, a Ridgway Borough Council member, attended the Elk County Solid Waste Authority's regular meeting on Tuesday afternoon in order to announce the council's decision to continue the borough's curbside recycling program.

Grady J. Cherry of 257 Rasselas Rd., Wilcox, died on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013 at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 in DuBois, the son of Stephen and Heather Tressler Cherry.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Johnsonburg.
Grady James fought for nine days for his family to get to know him. He was brave and determined and never gave up until the last moment. He is God's angel and proved that miracles really do happen even if they only last nine days.

School board discusses FSG roof project

County taxes on the rise

The Elk County Board of Commissioners on Monday morning voted to accept a proposed 2014 budget with a one-mill increase, the first hike since 2009. The budget will be displayed for 20 days at the commissioners' office in the Courthouse Annex along Center Street in Ridgway.

Hospital: Maternity ward not closing

ST. MARYS – Despite recent rumors circulating throughout the region, officials at Elk Regional Health Center said Monday morning that they have no plans to close the establishment's maternity ward.

Liquid fuels allocation formula questioned

Sometimes equality and fairness wear many faces.
That was the message Monday morning from Gary Anderson, a St. Marys City councilman who said he was attending a county board of commissioners meeting in an unofficial capacity as a taxpayer.
The issue for Anderson is the distribution of liquid fuels funds disbursed throughout the county.
The state's liquid fuels program funds a range of projects to support municipalities' construction, reconstruction, maintenance and repair of public roads or streets.

ECC students attend FBLA State Leadership Workshop

ST. MARYS – Six officers from Elk County Catholic High School's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter were among over 800 students who attended the FBLA State Leadership Workshop at the Penn State Hotel and Conference Center in State College on Nov. 10-11.

ECCSS donates $2,739 to Elk Regional's Women's Imaging Center

Students in the Elk County Catholic School System (ECCSS) recently presented Elk Regional Health Center with a check for $2,739 to benefit their Women's Imaging Center. The funds were raised during Pink Day activities at the Catholic elementary, middle, and high school.

Bonnie A. Johnson, 83, of 2011 Sizerville Rd., Emporium, died at UPMC-Hamot Medical Center, Erie on Saturday morning, Nov. 23, 2013.
She was born Jan. 9, 1930 in Wharton, daughter of the late Lester and Nora Jefferies Brown.
She married the late Harold Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson had worked at Sylvania and later for Northern Tier for many years. She was a beautiful person inside and out. She was a selfless, loving wife and mother and will be missed greatly. Heaven has gained another angel.
