Kuess Jr. wins national championship in smallbore standard rifle

Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) won the national championship in smallbore standard rifle as the 3-day competition concluded Tuesday at the Ridgway Rifle Club.
Kuess Jr. won the 3-day competition by tying the open national record, finishing with an aggregate total of 116 (39-39-38).

Elk County Fair begins today

KERSEY – The Elk County Fair begins today. The fair opens at 4 p.m. and carnival rides will be ready to go. The Monkey Man will be on the grounds from 4-10 p.m. and the Dazzling Mills Family will be onstage behind the Starr Pavilion at 5 p.m.
Cheesecake and trail mix registration will take place from 5-6 p.m. in Exhibit Hall No. 1. The straw pile will be in the Starr Pavilion at 5:30 p.m.

Night of music set to benefit CAPSEA

Area bands will come together Saturday, Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. for a concert at the Ridgway Eagles to benefit CAPSEA [Citizens Against Physical, Sexual, and Emotional Abuse, Inc.].

Team titles decided at Silhouette Championships

The smallbore team competitions concluded Monday at the Ridgway Rifle Club as part of the NRA National Silhouette Championships.
The overall champion in smallbore rifle was Team Belgrade Air Shooting Sports. The team consisted of Laura Goetsch, Cathy Winstead-Severin and Susan Peery Rice. The three finished with a combined total of 211, five more than second place.
The overall runner-up in standard rifle was Team Mexico with team members Angelica Kuess Davila, Enrique Kuess Sr. and Enrique Kuess Jr. Team Mexico finished with an overall score of 206.

Pa. routs N.Y. 53-12 in Big 30 game

BRADFORD – Some of the top recently graduated football players from Pennsylvania and New York faced off on Saturday evening at Parkway Field in Bradford in the 40th annual Big 30 Don Raabe Charities Classic All Star Football Game, and the Pa. squad defeated New York 53-12.
Warren Area Senior High School's Austin Jerman and Port Allegany High School's Matt Bodamer combined to account for around 430 yards passing in the game with Johnsonburg Area High School's Mitchell Holmberg catching seven passes for 92 yards and Ridgway Area High School's Zac McKnight catching three passes for 74 yards.

NRA National Silhouette Championships open in Ridgway

The NRA National Silhouette Championships kicked off Sunday morning with the first of three days of competition in the smallbore standard rifle competition at the smallbore range of the Ridgway Rifle Club.
The match winner for Sunday and overall leader after the first day of competition was Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) as he hit 39 out of a possible 40 targets. Angelica Kuess Davila (Laredo, Texas) was second overall and the top female finisher with a score of 38. Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) was third overall with a score of 37.

William H. Brunner

William H. Brunner, 77, of 3419 Grant Rd., Ridgway died Saturday afternoon, August 3, 2013, at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
He was born November 13, 1935 in Ridgway, son of the late Walter H. and Hattie (States) Brunner.
He married Lois J. Goodreau on April 24, 1954, and she preceded him in death on December 19, 2008.

Man injured in ATV crash

JAY TWP. – Emergency responders were dispatched Saturday night to Jay Township for an ATV accident near Bennetts Valley Highway and Spring Run Road.

Maintenance facility, storage shed fire declared arson

Corporal Greg Agosti, fire marshal for the Pennsylvania State Police reported Friday afternoon that the July 26 fire at a Ridgway Borough maintenance facility and A storage shed owned by the Tri-County Rails to Trails has been declared arson.

NRA national championships back in Ridgway

The National Silhouette Championships for smallbore and high power rifle from the National Rifle Association [NRA] are back in Ridgway at the rifle club along Grant Road.
