Clarion River cleanup to take place Aug. 13

A cleanup for a roughly nine-mile stretch of the Clarion River spanning from the Main Street bridge in Ridgway to the Portland Mills boat launch is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 13, according to Nick Irwin, an employee at Country Squirrel Outfitters, who came up with the idea for the event.

Allen E. "Brownie" Pearsall

Allen E. "Brownie" Pearsall, 79, of Oknefski Road, Ridgway, died Monday, August 5, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
He was born February 26, 1934, in Castle Garden, the son of the late Arthur H. and Louise Wolfe Pearsall Sr.
Formerly of Emporium, he was a self-employed TV repairman.

Silhouette Championships welcome Australian contingent

The NRA National Silhouette Championships welcomed a group of Australian shooters for the smallbore standard rifle and smallbore hunting rifle championships held Sunday through Tuesday at the Ridgway Rifle Club.

2013 Elk County Fair kicks off

The 39th annual Elk County Fair opened Tuesday afternoon at the fairgrounds in Kersey. The traditional Opening Ceremony began at 6 p.m. with brief welcoming statements by local and county government officials and a baked good auction. New royalty was also crowned. The 2013 Elk County Fair Queen is Alexa Marciniak, 16, a junior at Johnsonburg High School. She is the daughter of Dave and Jane Marciniak. The Junior Queen is Audrey South, 14, a freshman at St. Marys Area High School. She is the daughter of Brad South and Jim and Leigh Aaron. The runner-up was Alexis Swanson of Kersey.

Elk application deadline approaching

Elk were gone from Pennsylvania for about 50 years at the time the Game Commission began efforts to reintroduce them to the state in 1913.
One-hundred years later, the state’s elk herd is the largest in the Northeast and restoring elk to Pennsylvania is considered one of the great accomplishments in wildlife conservation history.
And for those hoping in this anniversary year to participate in Pennsylvania’s annual elk hunt, there’s still time to enter your name in the drawing for licenses.

Commissioners approve board additions

Karen Louise Plyler died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Thursday, July 25, 2013.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Agnes Eileen Biank of Nappanee, Ind.
She had lived in Elkhart, Ind. since the spring of 1983. She was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1969.
She loved nature and the outdoors. She enjoyed listening to music and loved to cook. She truly enjoyed the friendships she had made over the years through Faith Mission Home and Oaklawn. She will be forever loved and missed by many.

Edwin K. Galbreath Jr.

Edwin K. Galbreath Jr., age 74, of New Castle, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 6, 2013 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
Edwin was born March 21, 1939 in Wellsville, N.Y., son of Edwin K. Galbreath Sr. and Sybil L. Pytcher Galbreath.
He is survived to his wife, Pat Carnahan Galbreath, whom he married on May 21, 1960.

Winstead-Severin wins smallbore hunting rifle championship

Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) won the national championship in smallbore hunting rifle as part of the NRA National Silhouette Championships being held this week at the Ridgway Rifle Club.
Winstead-Severin finished with a 3-day total of 114 (39-39-36).
Angelica Kuess Davila (Laredo, Texas) was second overall with a total of 107 and Laura Goetsch (Whites Creek, Tenn.) placed third with a 107.
