Silhouette Championships welcome Australian contingent

The NRA National Silhouette Championships welcomed a group of Australian shooters for the smallbore standard rifle and smallbore hunting rifle championships held Sunday through Tuesday at the Ridgway Rifle Club.

2013 Elk County Fair kicks off

The 39th annual Elk County Fair opened Tuesday afternoon at the fairgrounds in Kersey. The traditional Opening Ceremony began at 6 p.m. with brief welcoming statements by local and county government officials and a baked good auction. New royalty was also crowned. The 2013 Elk County Fair Queen is Alexa Marciniak, 16, a junior at Johnsonburg High School. She is the daughter of Dave and Jane Marciniak. The Junior Queen is Audrey South, 14, a freshman at St. Marys Area High School. She is the daughter of Brad South and Jim and Leigh Aaron. The runner-up was Alexis Swanson of Kersey.

Elk application deadline approaching

Elk were gone from Pennsylvania for about 50 years at the time the Game Commission began efforts to reintroduce them to the state in 1913.
One-hundred years later, the state’s elk herd is the largest in the Northeast and restoring elk to Pennsylvania is considered one of the great accomplishments in wildlife conservation history.
And for those hoping in this anniversary year to participate in Pennsylvania’s annual elk hunt, there’s still time to enter your name in the drawing for licenses.

Commissioners approve board additions

Karen Louise Plyler died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Thursday, July 25, 2013.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Agnes Eileen Biank of Nappanee, Ind.
She had lived in Elkhart, Ind. since the spring of 1983. She was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1969.
She loved nature and the outdoors. She enjoyed listening to music and loved to cook. She truly enjoyed the friendships she had made over the years through Faith Mission Home and Oaklawn. She will be forever loved and missed by many.
