ST. MARYS â€“ While summer is prime flip flop season, it is also the ideal time to gather donations for the Flip Flops for Soldiers project. The New Jersey grass roots project's goal is to provide flip flops for the walking wounded military personnel as they pass through a transient medical facility in the Middle East.
Benjamin "Ben" Imbrogno, 21, of 30 River Rd., New York, N.Y., died Saturday morning, July 6, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys.
He was born October 6, 1991 in St. Vincent's Hospital in New York, N.Y., son of Richard C. and Naomi August Imbrogno.
He resided in New York City all his life. He graduated from New York City Museum School in 2009 and attended Brothers of Manhattan Community College.
Arlene M. (Blauser) Garbarino, age 61, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013 at her home in Midway with her family at her side.
She was born April 12, 1952 in Ridgway, daughter of John and Jacqueline (Garity) Blauser of Ridgway.
Arlene enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling to yard sales and flea markets, and also donated her time to the Midway Community Center, the Girl Scouts where she served as a leader, and to the Midway Fire Department.
WILLIAMSPORT â€“ Federal prosecutors in the USA v. Thomas Smith, the case of an Emporium man charged with the August 2012 attempted abduction of a bank teller at gunpoint, have submitted questions to be asked of prospective jurors when trial proceedings, previously set to begin today, resume on Aug. 5.
The St. Marys Legion baseball team split a doubleheader with the Wilcox Legion Saturday night at Berwind Park.
St. Marys won the first game by a 5-2 margin with Wilcox taking a lightning-shortened second game by a 9-1 score.
In the first game, St. Marys had 10 hits led by Dan Singer's four singles. Jack Herzing doubled while Ivan Wortman had two singles. Vince Jacob, Ben Cortina and Ben Reuscher all singled.
Quinn Luhr led Wilcox with a double and a single while Mitchell Holmberg, Ben MacDonald, Taylor Feronti and Austin Amacher all singled.
Area youngsters between the ages of five and 14 who plan to participate in Inner Park Day at Memorial Park this year are encouraged to sign up for the event by July 8. The free event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 10 with a rain date of the following day, and the advance signups are being held this year in an effort to provide each participant with an event T-shirt.
The St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce moved their annual Fourth of July celebration to the St. Marys Airport this year and, while some residents were hesitant about the move, many seemed pleased with the overall event and responded to a request on The Daily Press' Facebook page to share their thoughts.
RIDGWAY - With the majority of Elk County's 3,000 military veterans currently traveling up to two hours for hospitalization - and an hour for a checkup - through US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), a local advocacy group is working to bring a clinic here that would cater to the county's servicemen and women.
