Ridgway Firemen's Carnival comes to a close

July 21, 2013

Jack Cleaver (with microphone) sings "God Bless America" alongside Dave Parsons, the announcer for the annual parade. Cleaver sang "God Bless America" at the Pittsburgh Pirates game on Sunday, July 14 while the Concert Choir of Elk County sang the national anthem. Cleaver treated the hometown faithful to an encore of "God Bless America" at the start of the parade Saturday.

Frances L. Olewinski

Frances L. Olewinski, 83 of 724 Marvin St., Wilcox, formerly of Johnsonburg, died Thursday afternoon, July 18, 2013 at her residence following a brief illness.
She was born on March 30, 1930 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Bronislaw and Josephine Kolinoski Piurkoksi.
She married Henry A. Olewinski on Aug. 15, 1950 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg. He died Oct. 17, 2008.
She resided in Wilcox most of her life.
Mrs. Olewinski was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School in 1948.

Donna M. Corey

Donna M. Corey, 65, of 613 West Main St., Ridgway, died Friday, July 19, 2013 afternoon at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was born Nov. 22, 1947 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Harry T. and Nellie M. (Yale) Ecklund.
She married Joseph A. Corey on March 29, 1969, he survives.
She had resided in Ridgway all of her life and was a 1965 graduate of the Ridgway High School.
She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. She had been employed by Elk Regional Health Center for 45 years.

Domtar investigation continues, area smoldering

JOHNSONBURG – Corporal Greg Agosti, a state fire marshal at the State Police barracks in Ridgway reported Friday afternoon that the cause of the fire at Domtar paper mill Friday, July 12 is still under investigation.

Youth group strives to make religion fun

Emporium police arrest Eckenroad

EMPORIUM – The Emporium Borough Police Department report Anthony William Eckenroad was apprehended shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday night after obtaining an arrest warrant for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old female juvenile.

Women in the Outdoors event set for Aug. 4

ST. MARYS – The Wapiti Roost Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will be hosting a Women in the Outdoors event on Sunday, Aug. 4 at the St. Marys Sportsman's Club beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Shaffer faces charges for fires in Clearfield County

CLEARFIELD COUNTY – Kelly J. Shaffer, 20, of St. Marys, who was charged last month with placing pipe bombs at two separate locations in Elk County in May now faces charges in Clearfield County for setting a pair of fires during that same timeframe the DuBois-based State Police announced Wednesday.

Fox Township wins Legion League

WILCOX – Fox Township won the Elk County American Legion Baseball League championship with a 5-3 victory over Wilcox Wednesday at Jones Township Community Park in Wilcox in the deciding game of the tournament.
Overall, Fox Township took two out of three from Wilcox in the tournament.
