Ella Mae Powley, 94, of Bradford Manor, Bradford, formerly of Wilcox, died Sunday morning, Dec. 16, 2012 at Bradford Manor following a brief illness.
Powley was born Aug. 11, 1918 in Sergeant, daughter of the late Roy and Tirzah Reid Stanley.
She married the late George M. Powley on Oct. 22, 1938 in St. Nicholas Church, Sheffield; he died June 27, 2001.
After a defensive struggle in the first half, Ridgway was able to wear down Cameron County's defense in the second half and pull away for a 52-20 win over the Red Raiders Monday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway led 15-8 after a low-scoring first half of play.
"Coach (Cameron County coach Jon) Songer had a great game plan there," Ridgway coach Anthony Allegretto said. "They got those big kids standing in the zone, controlling the boards and they made us hit shots."
ST. MARYS - A former Crystal Fire Department firefighter charged with setting fire to his own mobile camper for the insurance money waived his preliminary hearing Friday in District Court 59-3-03.
The July 9 camper fire at 333 North St. Marys St. was one in a wave of arsons that swept through Elk County in 2012.
An investigation into the fire resulted in criminal charges of arson and insurance fraud being filed against 25-year-old Michael Anthony Scolari, who was not a member of CFD at the time the arson took place.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Exchange students Laura Sakalauskaite from Lithuania and Bagdad Abdurauf from Tajikistan are quickly adjusting to the Johnsonburg Area High School as their new home. Â
Sakalauskaite is being hosted by the Cardoni family of Johnsonburg and Abdurauf is being hosted by the Field family of Johnsonburg. Lisa Gustafson, French teacher at the Johnsonburg Area High School, was approached by the Cardoni and Field family to host an exchange student.
James H. Dietz, 90, of 106 Linwood Ave., St. Marys, died on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at Dubois Nursing Home following a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 11, 1922 in Ridgway, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Pfingstler Dietz.
On June 14, 1947 in St. Mark's Church in Emporium, he married the late Elizabeth J. "Betty" Dietz, who preceded him in death on Feb. 7, 2012.
Shirley E. Amacher, 87, of 224 Park Ave., Ridgway, died on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys following a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 9, 1925 in Brockway, a daughter of the late Clemens and Marie Weilacher Richards.
On May 30, 1952 in Brockway, she married the late Clayton Amacher, who preceded her in death in 1979.
Mrs. Amacher was a lifelong resident of the area and an active member of Ridgway Church of the Nazarene, where she also served as a custodian for many years.Â She enjoyed playing the piano and spending time with her family.
ST. MARYS â€“ The weather was sunny and fairly mild around noon on Saturday morning as a few dozen people gathered at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery to take part in the annual Wreaths Across America National Remembrance Ceremony and assist with placing wreaths on veterans' graves there and at the Protestant Cemetery.
A controversial lawsuit pitting the Elk County Board of Commissioners against the county sheriff's office was resolved with little fanfare Friday as following three hours of testimony both sides reached a settlement behind closed doors.
The civil suit was filed by Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg on Dec. 6 in an effort to compel the commissioners to cover the sheriff's nearly $9,000 budget deficit and retroactively pay his employees through the year's end up until the 2013 budget takes effect.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Ramettes overcame early foul trouble and cold shooting to improve to 3-1 on the season with a 55-38 victory Friday night against visiting Sheffield.
The Ramettes were paced by senior point guard Rhianon Fowler, whose 14 points led the team; Fowler was complemented by junior Chelsea Benson, who also crept into double digits with 11 points.
Ridgway girls basketball lost 70-28 to Curwensville Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway took an early lead as Jenni Thomas scored on a baseline jumper for a 2-0 Lady Elker lead. Dani Shirey also converted a jumper with 7:13 left in the first quarter to double the Ridgway lead to 4-0 lead.
