The Ruffed Grouse Society seeks volunteers to hand plant gray dogwood along a stream to improve habitat for grouse, woodcock, and songbirds.
“Grouse eat the berries of gray dogwood,” said Mary Hosmer, volunteer for the Ruffed Grouse Society. “Woodcock like to nest underneath dogwood shrubs, and some songbirds such as the chestnut-sided warbler build nests in small shrubs such as gray dogwood.”
The Children and Youth Services in Elk County recently received a $6,000 grant from the Women Who Care, an affiliate of the Elk County Community Foundation to support the community’s children with beds and bed linens.

ST. MARYS - A Byrnedale man, the alleged driver in a violent crash on SR 255 in Byrnedale that left 23-year-old Savannah O. Straub dead, was in District Court Tuesday for his preliminary hearing on charges including homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence.
Taxpayers employed within Ridgway Township will pay a local service tax [LST] following the adoption of an ordinance during Tuesday afternoon's board of supervisors meeting.
The body of Michael Snyder was recovered from the Kinzua Dam Tuesday, Nov. 20 at approximately 5 p.m. in the same area where the body of his wife was recovered on Nov. 11. The couple had drowned in a boating accident.

The Ridgway Borough Council adopted a tentative 2013 budget without a tax increase during Monday night's regular meeting.
LUDLOW – A State Police boat is scheduled to participate today in the search for the body of drowning victim in the Allegheny Reservoir.
Ardeth O. Lauffenburger, 71, passed into the next life Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, following an extended illness. She was born April 16, 1941, in Warren, to the late Wallace and Florence Fox Outrid.
A 1959 graduate of Warren High School, she had been employed by the Warren Times and the Ruth Smith Center. As a lifelong area resident, Ardeth enjoyed drawing, painting, and crafts, creating numerous plush pets and dolls.
Joan Ordiway, 81, of 94 Lincoln St., Ridgway, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2012.
She had the benefit of kind help at generations and Pine Crest over the past months.
This was only fair since she had been kind and helpful to others her entire life, especially young Air Force wives.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon; sons Lester and Frank; a sister, Sarha; and a niece, Sondra.
Her body has been donated to the anatomical board.
November 18th
Ridgway football was honored with a banquet Friday night at The Royal Inn.
Assistant coach Rick Viglione awarded the scholar-athlete award to Ridgway senior Joe Jaques.
Chet Gardner also honored the four seniors that have been with the Ridgway football program since they were nine years old and playing with the Rockets. Those four are Cortland Smith, Zac McKnight, Brett Himes and Logan Wickett.
