January 11th
William F. "Bill" Myers, 70, of 301 High Street, Johnsonburg, died on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
He was born on November 4, 1941 in Ridgway, son of the late Francis and Virginia Riekofsky Myers.
He married his wife of 50 years, Virginia "Ginny" Wenner on May 29, 1961 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg. She survives.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life and was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1959.
ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team remains undefeated after picking up a 47-29 victory over the visiting Punxsutawney Lady Chucks on Wednesday evening at ECCHS.
"I thought we played a pretty good basketball game," said ECC coach Ken Pistner. "It wasn't real sloppy, and I had us for 14 or 15 turnovers. I thought Punxsy played really hard, too. It was a good basketball game tonight."
Elk Catholic held a 12-5 lead at the end of the first period, was up 23-13 at the end of the second, and 29-22 at the conclusion of the third.

Ridgway Area School District Superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien discussed the impact of the Keystone Exams during Tuesday night's board of directors meeting.
The Keystone Exams are part of Pennsylvania's new system of high school graduation requirements and are designed to help school districts guide students toward meeting state standards by assessing their proficiency in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Literature, English, Composition, Biology, Chemistry, U.S. History, World History, and Civics and Government.
The Ridgway Heritage Council is proud to lend its support with a $2,500 donation to the fundraising effort for restoring the Pennsylvania Railroad Station along North Broad Street, initiated with a $50,000 donation by Dennis Heindl, in partnership with Ridgway Borough.
ST. MARYS - The 2nd Annual Elk County Catholic Alumni Spirit Night is set for Friday evening. This year's event is being held in conjunction with the much-anticipated ECC versus St. Marys Area boys' basketball game.
The cross-town rivals will meet at ECC this year and event organizers are encouraging alums to sport their alma mater's colors of maroon and gold to cheer the Crusaders. The junior varsity game is set for 6 p.m., with the varsity matchup tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
James T. "Perch" O'Connell, 58, of 225 Fairies St., Wilcox died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2012 at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 21, 1953 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Daniel and Dorothy Heglen O'Connell.
On Sept. 11, 1976, in the Wilcox Presbyterian Church, he married Debra "Debbie" Stanley, who survives.

Johnsonburg wrestling lost 39-29 in a dual meet against Sheffield Monday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Johnsonburg won four of the six matches wrestled on the mat against the Wolverines. Johnsonburg coach Mike Votano said the team's hard work is showing in the improvement as the season has progressed.
On Monday afternoon, Elk County President Judge Richard Masson handed down a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole to Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, who was found guilty of second-degree murder in the April 5-6, 1999 homicide of Irene Challingsworth, a 56-year-old St. Marys beautician.
Several family members of homicide victim Irene Challingsworth addressed Lawrence Donachy, found guilty of her homicide and sentenced to life in prison without parole, during his sentencing hearing held Monday afternoon at the Elk County Courthouse.
The first to speak was Challingsworth's daughter, Kelly Bauer of St. Marys, who also testified during the preliminary hearing and trial.
Bauer said Challingsworth was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter and much more to the people who cared about her.
