The 2013 Elk County Relay for Life will begin on a Saturday instead of a Friday this year to give more area residents an opportunity to participate.
According to Public Relations Chair Barbie Simbeck, the Relay for Life Committee and teams voted to have the event begin on Saturday, June 8 at 9 a.m. and end on Sunday, June 9 at 9 a.m. The event will still be held at the Fox Township Community Park.
PITTSBURGH – The creation of a new court program geared toward offering support services to military veterans charged with and convicted of criminal offenses was announced recently for Western Pennsylvania as part of an initiative being led by the region's U.S. District Court.
JOHNSONBURG – Operation Christmas Child is a program that supports needy children around the world.
The program is conducted by Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse which is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to people around the world. Samaritan’s Purse consistently helps to meet the needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine.
Johnsonburg area churches helped to create and collect shoe boxes to support Samaritan’s Purse.

Area residents came out Friday night to celebrate Ridgway's Light Up Night celebration. Area youth got to sit on Santa's lap during the evening.
Various community organizations recently collaborated in a toy challenge to collect Christmas presents for Project Gifts for Elk County.
Frank J. “Cannonball” Carnovale, age 92, of Market Street, Johnsonburg, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at Elk Regional Hospital after a short illness.
He was born June 12, 1920 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Michael J. & Angela (Galati) Carnovale, both deceased.
A member of the Holy Rosary Church, Piedmonte, Johnsonburg Moose, Legion and Sportsmen’s, he had resided in Johnsonburg all his life. Served as an MP in the Army during WWII in the Asiatic/Pacific Theaters. He retired from Johnsonburg Paper Mill in 1982 after 43 years and being part of the Woodyard Spruce Gang.

JOHNSONBURG – A Johnsonburg man, the target of a Sept. 26 federal search warrant served by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and members of the Pennsylvania State Police, waived his preliminary hearing on drug charges stemming from the search and seizure in District Court 59-3-02 on Wednesday.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, the search and seizure conducted at the 112 East Ave., Johnsonburg home of David A. Blashaw, 55, yielded “a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.”
JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Municipal Authority discussed reducing the Johnsonburg Volunteer Fire Department's hydrant rental fees during Tuesday night's regular meeting.
The board agreed to form a three-man committee comprised of Dane Condino, Doug Haupright and Ed Gapinski in an effort to meet and discuss reducing the hydrant rates by 50 percent with members of the Johnsonburg Borough Council.
A year ago, Ridgway Area High School junior Angela DeAngelo took part in the school's powder puff game.
It piqued her interest for kicking with the varsity team and DeAngelo just completed her first season as the extra point kicker for the Ridgway Elkers.
JOHNSONBURG – A Highland Township supervisor and sewage treatment plant operator for the James City Sewage Treatment Plant waived his preliminary hearing in District Court 59-3-02 Wednesday on charges that he violated environmental laws in allegedly falsifying environmental reports and discharging some 10 million gallons of raw sewage from the treatment plant into a nearby stream.
