Lady Crusaders win AML girls championship

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team captured the 2012 Allegheny Mountain League girls’ championship Saturday night by defeating the Kane Lady Wolves 38-25 at the St. Marys Area High School.
The Lady Crusaders were able to take the early 4-0 lead and led 10-6 at the end of the first quarter. They led 21-12 at the half and never trailed throughout the contest.
“Throughout the year we have been playing good defensive basketball,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. “At this time of the year we are going in the right direction. We’re getting better.”

Driver hurt as log truck hits, destroys house

KANE – Like a 40-ton missile, a fully-loaded log truck careened out-of-control Saturday morning and sliced into a wood-frame house on Route 66 in the Ten Commandments area just south of Kane.
Miraculously, the truck driver and four people inside the house were not seriously injured.
The truck driver—Thomas L. Jashurek, 39, of Kane—was taken from the scene by Emergycare ambulance and immediately placed on a medical helicopter at the landing pad at Kane Community Hospital.

'It's bigger than a miracle,' crash survivor says

KANE – Bruce Peterson no longer has a house.
It was suddenly taken away Saturday when it was struck and destroyed by an out-of-control fully-loaded log truck.
Despite losing his home of 25 years, Peterson is grateful.
The impact miraculously spared his life and the lives of three other family members who were inside the house at the time of the spectacular crash on Route 66 in the Ten Commandments area of Wetmore Township just south of Kane.
"It's bigger than a miracle," Peterson said Sunday with tears in his eyes. "Somehow, we all made it out alive. God was with us."

Death investigation under way in Jay Township

JAY TWP. – The Ridgway-based state police reported on Saturday evening that they are currently involved with the investigation of a death that took place in Jay Township between 2 and 6 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18. According to police, Gary G. Farcus Jr., 20, of DuBois was located in the front yard of a residence along the north side of SR 555, approximately 3/10 of a mile east of Apple Street in Jay Township. Assisting at the scene were the Bennetts Valley Ambulance, St. Marys Ambulance, and the Elk County Coroner's office.

Ridgway advances to AML Championship over Elk County Catholic

Ridgway advanced to its second consecutive AML Championship game with a 51-37 victory over Elk County Catholic in the boys' basketball AML semifinal Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.

Rams dispose DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals, eye Ridgway Part IV

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams are clicking at the right time of the year.
Just a week and a half removed from spoiling Ridgway's perfect season, the Rams (20-3) handily defeated DuBois Central Catholic 69-44 in the semifinals of the Allegheny Mountain League [AML] semifinals, setting up the Rams' fourth meeting with the Elkers (22-1) tonight in St. Marys for the AML crown.
Ridgway dropped Elk County Catholic for the second time this season, this time by a 51-37 score.

Lady Crusaders reach AML final with 43-26 win

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders advanced to tonight’s Allegheny Mountain League championship game with a 43-26 victory over the Brockway Lady Rovers last night at the ECCHS gym.
Elk Catholic will meet the Kane Lady Wolves, who defeated the DuBois Central Lady Cardinals 53-47 last night at DuBois Central.
Last night at the ECCHS gym the Lady Crusaders opened a 12-4 lead after the first quarter, then scored the first eight points of the second period to take a 20-4 lead before Brockway could get on the board in the second eight minute stanza.

Lady Dutch defeat Lady Elkers, 67-31

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch picked up a 67-31 senior night victory over the Ridgway Lady Elkers on Friday evening at St. Marys Area High School.
The Lady Dutch led all the way, taking a 19-7 first-period advantage, leading 36-12 at the half, and 52-20 at the end of three quarters.
"It was a nice win on senior night recognizing our three seniors. They played well tonight," said St. Marys coach Leona Hoohuli.

13th Rendezvous begins today

The 13th installment of the Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous starts today and event organizers couldn't be happier with their plans for the week.
In addition to carvers doing their thing on South Broad Street to Center Street, then Center Street down to Mill Street, and Court Street as well, they also will be performing at other locations.

Pa. residents can support breast cancer programs on tax returns

Pennsylvania residents who want to support breast cancer research and programs can do so simply by checking off a box on their state tax return.
The PA Breast Cancer Coalition's "Refunds for Research" campaign allows residents to donate part or all of their state refund by checking "yes" on line 35 of their PA 40 tax form. Kevin Smith, communications director for the nonprofit coalition, said for most people, directing their refund to the coalition on their tax return is an easy way of charitable giving.
