Mavis B. Schott

Mavis B. Schott, 95, of West Long Avenue, DuBois, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home.
Born on Nov. 16, 1916 in Birmingham, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Commodore and Mamie (Smithers) Byrd.
She was married to Alvin Schott. He preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1958.
During World War II, she worked at Sylvania in Emporium. She had also worked as a clerk at various stores in Johnsonburg.

Danz arrested in N.C., facing extradition

MECKLENBURG CO., N.C. - Following his apprehension in Matthews, N.C. on Wednesday, Richard A. Danz, 47, of St. Marys, wanted by authorities in connection with felony charges alleging he defrauded Elk County businesses and private investors, was charged as a fugitive and released Thursday on $30,000 bond in a Mecklenburg County, N.C. district court.

Borough targets blighted homes

JOHNSONBURG – Finding a solution for many of the abandoned and dilapidated properties throughout the Borough of Johnsonburg has been an ongoing problem.
Discussion over the matter was sparked during Monday afternoon's regular council meeting from a complaint filed regarding a property along Penn Street.
According to borough manager Mary Polaski, the Johnsonburg resident who filed the complaint brought up the issues of high grass and an incomplete front porch.
Polaski said the borough has been unable to verify contact with the Penn Street property owner.

School district terminates CENTAX

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District terminated their agreement with the Central Tax Bureau [CENTAX] for the collection of the local service tax and the occupational privilege tax during the regular board of directors meeting.
Following the termination of the agreement the board promptly approved a resolution to appoint H.A. Berkheimer as the tax collector for the local service and occupational privilege taxes.
According to JASD Board Treasurer Patricia Calkins, the district has received about $35,000 of the $48,000 owed from CENTAX.

Masson praises monument organizers, park

Elk County Freshwater Association successfully completes first major project

MARYS – Following the completion of a watershed restoration project six years in the making, the Elk County Freshwater Association recently held a presentation at the St. Marys Moose to provide area residents with a detailed account of their endeavors to reduce the impact of acid rain on Big Mill Creek and announce the next project they plan to tackle.

Lady Elkers host golf match

Ridgway girls golf hosted the first of two scheduled home matches Thursday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Ridgway, DuBois, Brookville, Punxsutawney, Brockway and Curwensville all competed at Laurel Mill.
For Ridgway, senior Logan Feronti led the team with a score of 60. Sam Carobine and Sarah Szczotka each carded scores of 68 and Shania Reitz finished with a score of 80 to round out the top four scores that counted as Ridgway finished with a team score of 276. Beth Renaud carded a score of 82 and Emily Spiers had a mark of 88.

Ridgway volleyball downs St. Marys Lady Dutch, 3-0

ST. MARYS – The Ridgway Lady Elker volleyball team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 3-0 setback last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Elkers won the first set by a 28-26 score. They took the second set 25-15 and won the third set 25-13 to win the match.

Ramettes drop tough match to strong DuBois team

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes turned in a worthwhile performance Thursday but fell short against a powerful DuBois tennis team in a 9-0 defeat.
"DuBois is an outstanding team," said Johnsonburg head girls varsity tennis coach Gregg Dauber. "We played well but when we made some shots, [DuBois] made better shots. You can tolerate losing and playing well, and we never like losing, but playing as well as we did and still losing makes it easier to deal with."

Former Humane Society treasurer taken into custody

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys City Police report that former Elk County Humane Society treasurer and financial advisor Richard A. Danz was taken into custody on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in North Carolina.
Criminal charges have been filed against Danz, 47, of 376 Walnut St., St. Marys, in connection with the alleged theft of funds through his position with the organization, as well as charges alleging he defrauded clients of investments made through his private tax preparation business.
