JOHNSONBURG - Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of Ridgway, currently incarcerated on arson and arson-related charges for his alleged role in setting two Elk County house fires, as well as charges of attempted murder and assault stemming from the beating of a Ridgway man, was in District Court in Johnsonburg Wednesday where he waived his preliminary hearing on new charges of felony firearm possession and violations of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetics Act (CSDDCA).
DuBOIS – State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) and Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson (R-5) were among the individuals who attended a special ceremony on Wednesday morning at VFW Post 813 in DuBois to pause to honor area veterans who served during the Vietnam War.
The salute to the veterans was hosted by Gabler, who acknowledged that for many of the 126 veterans in attendance at the ceremony, their "return home was not as it should have been."
Robert F. Weidert, 89, of 620 N. Maple Ave., Ridgway died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
ST. MARYS - Organizers of the "Ride for a Dream" Equine Dice Run are hoping for a large turnout for their event taking place Saturday, Sept. 15 at the St. Marys Campowners located on Airport Road.
An auction, cash drawing, spaghetti dinner, pony rides, balloon launch and DJ are among the scheduled activities for the day.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Make-A-Wish of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia.
Carolyn N. Erlanson, 88, of 210 N. Broad St., Ridgway died Monday evening on Sept. 3, 2012 at the Lutheran Home at Kane following a brief illness. She was born March 10, 1924 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Anthony and Inez [Deltinto] Catalano. She was married to Elder J. [Bob] Erlanson who preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 2002. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and has been a former girl scout leader. She had been employed by St. Marys Carbon for 25 years.

Ridgway volleyball rebounded after a first-set loss for a hard-fought 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 28-26) victory over Punxsutawney Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School in the Lady Elkers’ season opener.
JOHNSONBURG – Looking to build momentum throughout the 2012 season, the Ramettes got off to a good start on the volleyball court with a 3-1 (25-9, 25-22, 15-25, 25-13) win Tuesday night in their home opener against visiting Sheffield.
“I think all our hitters did well and [senior] Sam Bevacqua served quite well,” said Johnsonburg head varsity volleyball coach Bill Shuey following the win. “We were also able to make some good sets out of bad passes. I guess it’s a good start.”
