Ridgway boys golf downs Johnsonburg

Ridgway boys golf won 205-222 over Johnsonburg on a rainy Thursday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Individual medalist honors were split among four different golfers. Josh Roselli and T.J. Schlimm shot 39 for Ridgway while Cameron Grumley and Nate Burgeson did the same for Johnsonburg.
“Some nice playing under tough conditions for the first group,” Ridgway coach Dave Zawatski said. “Our depth once again was the difference.”
Jesse Reynolds had a 40 for Ridgway and Josh Mitchell followed with a 43. Morgan Eckenroth carded a 44.

Lady Elkers shut out ECC

ST. MARYS — The Ridgway Lady Elkers got a goal early in both halves of Thursday's girls' varsity soccer game at Benzinger Park in shutting out the home-standing Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders 2-0.
The Lady Crusaders have now failed to score in any five of their home games this season-- a total of 400 minutes of soccer.
In yesterday's contest, the Lady Crusaders managed just four shots at goal against Ridgway. The Lady Elkers finished with 13 shots and a four-to-none advantage in corners.

Dutchmen dominate Ridgway soccer, 5-1

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys Area Dutch soccer team avenged an early-season loss to Ridgway in a big way on Thursday afternoon, tallying up the most goals they have scored in a single contest all year en route to a 5-1 trouncing of the Elkers.
"I'm just real proud of the guys today," said St. Marys Area coach Russ Micale. "We came back and avenged a previous loss of the season."
"We talked about beating those teams that beat us previously, and this was one of them," he added.

SWA discusses new recycling law

FOX TWP. – Members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority discussed the impact a new electronics recycling law that takes effect in January may have on operations at the Elk County Community Recycling Center.
Elk County Solid Waste/Recycling Coordinator Bekki Titchner said as of Jan. 24, the state will prohibit "covered devices," or electronics like televisions, computers, keyboards, printers and accessories from being deposited in landfills. Municipal waste trucks will no longer be able to collect these items curbside for disposal at a landfill.

Awareness efforts during ‘Wake up to Medicine Abuse Week’

ST. MARYS – Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc. is working to bring more attention to the problem of prescription drug abuse during “Wake Up to Medicine Abuse Week,” running from Sept. 23 to Sept. 29.
Jennifer Young, prevention supervisor with Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc., in Elk County, said the goal of this initiative is to increase awareness of prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse and misuse, which has risen dramatically in the last few years.

ATF, PSP serve federal search warrant at Johnsonburg residence

JOHNSONBURG – The Ridgway-based Pennsylvania State Police conducted a joint investigation with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at a residence on East Avenue in Johnsonburg. According to police, PSP and the ATF served a federal search warrant at that location. Police said the joint law enforcement operation occurred as a result of information discovered during the arson investigations surrounding Francis Anthony Milliard. All investigations are continuing.
No further information was available as of press time.

Former firefighter charged with arson

ST. MARYS - A former member of the Crystal Fire Department was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Mark Jacob on charges including arson and related offenses, insurance fraud, criminal mischief, and recklessly endangering another person, in connection with a July 9 fire involving a camper parked in the driveway of his North St. Marys Street residence.

Small petroleum spill contained in Ridgway

A small amount of petroleum from a known vehicle created a thin sheen over a portion of the roads in downtown Ridgway late Wednesday afternoon before being contained.
All firefighting units from Ridgway responded to the call at 4:11 p.m., and shortly thereafter the Elk County hazardous materials [hazmat] team responded at 4:30 p.m.
According to Ridgway fire chief John Wygant, upon arrival firefighters discovered a thin layer of petroleum on Depot Street from the bridge crossing Elk Creek all the way to the foot of Boot Jack.

Some agriculture programs on hold with no Farm Bill

For the second time in 39 years, a federal Farm Bill governing the nation's farm and food aid policy is set to expire at the end of September.
According to Eric Bridges, executive director of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC], Congress has decided to postpone negotiations over how to reauthorize those programs until after the November elections.

Community Recycling Center kicks off PET thermoform recycling program

ST. MARYS - The Elk County Community Recycling Center, located in the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys, officially kicked off their polyethylene terephthalate (PET) thermoform plastic recycling program on Wednesday, holding an open house to educate residents about PET thermoforms as well as other materials that are able to be recycled through the facility.
According to Community Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner, PET thermoform plastic is something that "just about everybody runs into."
