The Elk County Conservation District [ECCD] has halted the hiring of a resource conservation technician following a decision by the Elk County Board of Commissioners to revisit the issue.
A St. Marys man convicted of 189 counts of burglary and related charges stemming from a multitude of burglaries committed at camps throughout Elk, McKean, and Cameron counties was sentenced Monday in Elk County Court to serve no less than 11 years, 3 months and no more than 30 years in state prison.
Daniel Aiello, 27, of St. Marys, was convicted of the charges against him in August by a 12-member jury following a three-day trial which included testimony from victimized camp owners, investigators, Aiello's stepfather, and Aiello's half-brother and alleged accomplice, Mark Paul Kimes Aiello.
ST. MARYS â€“ According to court documents filed on March 12, 2012, St. Marys Country Club President James R. Slay filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the club closed on Aug. 31.
The voluntary petition was filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Western District of Pennsylvania, and listed Slay as the debtor. According to the petition, the club is a tax-exempt organization under the Internal Revenue Code and has both estimated assets and liabilities between $500,000 and $1 million.
Lillian Gladine DeSalve McMillen, age 81, of DuBois, formerly of Penfield, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home.
Born on Jan. 4, 1931 in Penfield, she was the daughter of the late James Cletas and Selma Oleta (Beck) Munn.
On Oct. 9, 1948, she married John DeSalve. He preceded her in death. On April 16, 1977, she married William E. McMillen. He preceded her in death as well.
Lillian had worked for 17 years at BF Goodrich in DuBois.
She enjoyed bowling, knitting, gardening and her grandchildren.
William (Gussie) Gusmerotti, 63, of Ridgway, died Friday night, September 21, 2012 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
William was born Feb. 17, 1949 in DuBois, the son of the late Isaac and Maria (Bleggi) Gusmerotti. Â
William worked at Weyerhaeuser in Ridgway and Keystone Carbon in St. Marys.Â He also was employed many years at Ridgway Dry Cleaner. He was an active member of the Ridgway Moose Club. Â
ST. MARYS â€“ Elk County Catholic boys golf won the District 9 Class AA boys golf team championship on Monday at Bavarian Hills Golf Course as part of the first day of the District 9 boys golf championship.
ECC finished with a team total of 335. Elliott Struble is tied for the lead after the first day with a score of 75. Mitchell Struble also is a qualifier for the second round with a score of 82. The top 14 finishers and ties qualify for the final round on Saturday. The top eight finishers from Saturday advance to regionals at Tom's Run in Blairsville. The cut line ended up being 84.
The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch soccer team lost a tough 1-0 contest to the Ridgway Lady Elkers Monday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.
The lone goal of the game came at the 30:34 mark of the first half when Ridgwayâ€™s Abbie Lampman scored from the left side, giving Ridgway the eventual only goal of the contest.
Ridgway dominated play in the first half as they kept the ball in the St. Marys half of the field. The Lady Elkers had seven shots on goal to St. Marysâ€™ one. They also had seven corner kicks in the first 40 minutes of play.
KANE â€“ Being a high school athlete takes a tremendous amount of time, effort and determination.
Being a female athlete in a male-dominated sport takes even more of a commitment. There have been a few girls in the history of Kane athletics to wrestle or go out for football, but only Taylor Detrick has played the entire way from middle school through her senior year.
Taylor, the daughter of Jim and Chris Detrick, has been playing organized football since she was a Kane Tornado at nine years old.
Taylor said she never considered not playing, she simply loves football.
