The Ridgway YMCA "Shape the Future" capital campaign, "pool project," is one step closer to its $1.5 million goal following a substantial donation Wednesday afternoon from CNB Bank in Ridgway.
According to Ridgway YMCA Executive Director Mary Lynne Bellotti, this marks the first large donation the YMCA has received for the campaign.
"With the community's support I know that this project will become a reality for the community of Ridgway," Bellotti said.
KERSEY â€“ The Elk County Fair is featuring a new event this year, as a "street truck tire pull" event will debut at the fairgrounds in Kersey.
"I was at a fair in Albion [N.Y.] and people come off the streets with their pickup trucks and try to pull this weight behind them," said Merv Kemmer, fair manager.
In Albion, N.Y., the event was quite popular and Kemmer hopes to replicate that popularity in Kersey.
"They received a good turnout [in Albion]," Kemmer said. "We have large industrial tires [on the Al Dietz Memorial Track] and it's going to be a fun night to see how it works out."
KERSEY â€“Â A last-minute notification at the Elk County Fair will prevent some individuals from enjoying the rides on the fairgrounds.
According to Jamie Wolfe, grounds manager, children who are not at least 36 inches tall are unable to ride on the Midway Rides of Utica's equipment.
"It's all due to unforeseen circumstances and it's not the Fair's fault," Wolfe said. "The manufacturers of the rides told [Midway Rides of Utica] that their requirements and assessments of the rides say no riders less than 36 inches tall."
Area residents are preparing for the 2012 St. Leo's Summer Festival scheduled for Aug. 10, 11, and 12 at the Ridgway Firemen's Lot in Ridgway.
Booths will open at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 and a chicken barbecue sale will begin at 5:30 p.m. and run while supplies last. "The Avenue," comprised of former members of "Eclectic Radio" and "Mr. Meaner" will perform from 6:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
Booths will open at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 with Kids Playland open from 5-9 p.m. The Green Eggs Band is scheduled to perform from 6:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
Mary Ann Martini, age 53, a Rattlesnake Road resident in Brockport, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012 at her residence.
She was born May 19, 1959 in DuBois, daughter of John "Jack" and Marian Koval Marshall.
She was a member at St. Tobias in Brockway. Mary Ann was an active United Way volunteer. She also served as an EMT at Brockway Ambulance. She had been the editor for O-I's newsletter "Changing Times News" and served as shop steward at the plant, and on the business committee for Local #110.
Kenneth Randall Simon, 64, of 1806 Arroyo Rd., Ridgway, died Sunday at his residence.
He was born Jan. 31, 1948 in Ridgway, son of the late John F. and Connie M. (Tate) Simon. He had resided in the Ridgway area all of his life and was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a 1966 graduate of the Ridgway High School and was also a graduate of Penn State University with a B.A. and a Master's degree in wildlife biology. He had been employed by AlliedBarton Security Services at Graftech in St. Marys for 20 years and had also been a deputy game warden for 25 years.
KERSEY â€“ Work continued over the weekend as members of Midway Utica, N.Y. moved their amusement rides in preparation for this week's Elk County Fair.
While patrons will later this week embark on the fairgrounds in Kersey, organizers said work for this year's fair began just a little while after last year's event ended.
"We've been doing our hoagie fundraisers, they do very well, and we've had flea market craft shows that do fairly decent," said Jamie Wolfe, grounds manager. "We have a sign program as well where you pay money to have a sign on the fence at the grounds."
ST. MARYS â€“ Elk Regional's acute care service for non-urgent health care needs, called "Q Care," has been restructured with new hours, a new location, and lower costs to better serve area residents.
Susan (Asunta) Mann Veneziano, age 103, passed away Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at the Twinbrook Medical Center.
Formerly of Erie, she resided in Harbor Creek Township. She was born in Brockway July 18, 1909, daughter of the late Salvadore and Angeline Mann. She is survived by her sons, Barnie Veneziano of Harbor Creek, with whom she lived, Thomas Veneziano and his wife, Marge, of Charleston, S.C., and James Michael Veneziano of North East; and her daughter, Suzanne Scaduto and her husband, John, of Henderson, Nev.
KERSEY â€“ Organizers and volunteers are vigorously preparing for next week's 38th Annual Elk County Fair in Kersey.
With amusement rides provided by Midway Rides of Utica, N.Y., general admission is $6 daily or patrons may purchase advance tickets at the Corner Market & Deli in Kersey. Advanced tickets will be sold for $20 and will give a patron access during all five days of the fair, which runs from Tuesday, Aug. 7 through Saturday, Aug. 11.
