Kathleen “Pat” Kneidel Meloni

Kathleen “Pat” Kneidel Meloni, 87, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012 in Erie.
She was born in St. Marys on Dec. 4, 1924, daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Reider Kneidel.
Pat was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, the Ladies Guild and the New Life group of the church.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Andrew (Robert) of Baltimore, Md., and Karen Meloni (Darrell Kruszewski) of Erie; two sisters, Jean Schatz of St. Marys and Joan Rusciolelli (Frank) of Ridgway; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Columbia M. Fabiano

Columbia M. Fabiano, age 93, formerly of 312 Chestnut Ave., Ridgway, died Tuesday evening, June 5, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born April 23, 1919, in Daguscahonda, daughter of the late Domenic and Rita (Fiorentino) Dagustine. She married James J. Fabiano on July 29, 1939, he preceded her in death on July 30, 1980. She had resided in Ridgway for most of her life and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Frederick A. "Fred" Habicht

Frederick A. "Fred" Habicht, 79, of Mefferts Run Road in Wilcox, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at home after an illness of five years.
He was born Nov. 5, 1932 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Fred and Mary Theresa (Marchese) Habicht.
On Feb. 11, 1956, he married Darline Elizabeth (Severance), who survives, in Wilcox.

Moore discusses DEP program

Jake Moore, working out of the state Department of Environmental Protection's Meadville office, gave a report Tuesday morning on the source water protection technical assistance program [SWPTAP] during an Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting.
Local source water protection [SWP] programs are community-based voluntary efforts to protect drinking water sources used by community water systems. Local SWP programs are effective tools for public health protection, water supply security and managing operational and capital costs through improved or maintained source water quality.

New ERHC maternity unit delivers on form, function

ST. MARYS – Elk Regional Health Center's highly anticipated eight-bed maternity unit was revealed at an open house Tuesday in St. Marys.
The new maternity unit, which cost approximately $1.7 million to complete, began July 2011 and is part of ERHC's $10.3 million construction and renovation project, which includes a new third floor with 42 new, private medical/surgical/pediatrics rooms with private baths in each; two new, centrally located nurses' stations to oversee each half of the medical/surgical/pediatrics unit; and a new 10-bed geriatric behavioral health unit.

Streich drafted in sixth round by Athletics

A lifelong dream became reality for Seth Streich on Tuesday.
Streich, a junior at Ohio University, was selected in the sixth round with the 199th overall pick by the Oakland Athletics on the second day of the MLB Draft.

Lady Crusaders advance in PIAA playoffs over Sto-Rox

BROCKWAY - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class A softball tournament with a 6-2 victory over the Sto-Rox Vikings Monday afternoon at the Brockway Area High School field.
The Lady Crusaders will meet District 5 champion Fannett Metal Thursday at a site and time to be announced. Fannett Metal defeated District 7 runner-up Carmichaels 12-1 Monday.

Crusaders advance with 6-2 win over West Middlesex

SLIPPERY ROCK – It was cloudy and cool Monday afternoon at Jack Critchfield Park at Slippery Rock University for the PIAA Class A baseball championship opening-round game between West Middlesex and Elk County Catholic, but the Crusaders' bats were hot and so was sophomore Brandon Schlimm's pitching as ECC led all the way for a 6-2 victory.

Wilcox Legion wins season opener

WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion baseball team overwhelmed Smethport for an 11-0, 5-inning victory Monday night at Jones Township Community Park in the season opener of American Legion play.
Wilcox put the throttle down with a 7-run third inning after already establishing a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Schneider settles in as county prothonotary

After garnering over 61 percent of the voters' approval in the November general election, Susanne Straub Schneider has settled in over the last few months as the county's new prothonotary.
Susanne originally started out in the second deputy's position within the office, a post that served as a stepping stone for greater things to come.
"When the second deputy position became available, [Elk County Treasurer Peggy Schneider] asked me if I would be interested," Susanne said. "I interviewed with the prothonotary at the time, David Frey, and I was hired as second deputy, that was in 2010.
