ERHC hosts luminary service 'honoring those who serve'

ST. MARYS – In honor of Memorial Day, a luminary service hosted by Elk Regional Health Center was held on Thursday night in recognition of individuals and organizations for their service to both community and country.
The evening began with a rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" sung by Betty Schogren, Rene Smith, and the Rev. Craig Duffield.
In welcoming those in attendance, Gregory P. Bauer, president and CEO of Elk Regional Health System, discussed the importance of recognizing the sacrifice of America's servicemen and women.

Residents should keep recycling in mind during weekend celebrations

Events such as cookouts, family reunions, and graduation parties make Memorial Day weekend a time of revelry for many area residents.
While recycling is not likely at the forefront of most people's minds during this time, individuals still should be cognizant some of the materials that can be recycled following their holiday gatherings.
"Not only should people think about what they can recycle, they should also consider what they can re-use to reduce what goes into the trash at the end of the day," said Bekki Titchner, Elk County recycling and solid waste coordinator.

Barbara Dianne (Marshall) Beers

Barbara Dianne (Marshall) Beers, 64, of Coquille, Ore., passed away on May 21, 2012 at her residence after a yearlong illness.
She was born June 4, 1947 in Ridgway, daughter of the late James B. Marshall and Lucille E. (Hostetlar) Marshall of DuBois, who survives.
On May 6, 1967, she married her lifelong partner, James Beers, who survives.

Shuey wins state title in javelin

SHIPPENSBURG – Johnsonburg's Michael Shuey wasn't able to get a gold medal last weekend at the District 9 Track and Field meet.
He made sure to add one on Friday.
Shuey won the PIAA gold medal in the javelin event with a mark of 200-1 during the first day of competition at the PIAA Track and Field Championships held at Shippensburg University.

Peterson 2-run shot leads Rams to 10-1 over Hubbers

JOHNSONBURG – A 2-run shot to right field from sophomore starting shortstop Cole Peterson topped off a 6-run fourth inning as the Rams toppled Smethport 10-1 in the quarterfinals of the District 9 Class A baseball playoffs.
The win elevates the Rams' pristine record to 20-0 as No.1 seed Johnsonburg prepares for a semifinal matchup Tuesday at a site and time to be determined against Elk County Catholic, seeded No. 5 with a 15-5 mark. Two of those losses came against the Rams.
