Matt Quesenberry, director of Elk County's planning department, presented an award Tuesday morning to the county's board of commissioners.
The Pennsylvania Wilds planning team, of which Quesenberry is a member, recently received a 2012 Governor's Award for Local Government Excellence.
In light of the increased environmental awareness due to the Marcellus Shale gas industry impacting local municipalities on various levels, the Elk County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday re-pledged their commitment to safety.
William Granche, a member of Elk County C.A.R.E.S. [Citizens Advocating Responsible Environmental Stewardship], shared his views on the subject with the commissioners.
Elk County Prison Board officials met Tuesday morning for their quarterly board meeting and reviewed several items, including a recent audit and 100-percent compliance through a state inspection.
"The audit of the Elk County Prison funds was done by the Elk County auditors at the beginning of this year and everything was OK with all the accounts," said Elk County Prison Warden Gregory J. Gebauer. "For 2011, the prison generated $122,178.60. The prison was inspected by the state Department of Corrections on April 10 and we received 100-percent compliance.
JOHNSONBURG – It wasn't pretty but the Johnsonburg Rams extended their winning streak to 11-0 on the season with a 1-0 shutout win Tuesday over visiting Elk County Catholic (8-4).
The Rams combined three pitchers for seven innings of work and overcame six walks as they effectively scattered three hits while Johnsonburg pushed a run across in the second inning.
Johnsonburg starting pitcher Quinn Luhr, who was 2-for-2 on the day with a walk and a run scored, led off the bottom of the second inning with an infield single to ECC shortstop Dan Singer to put a runner aboard with no outs.
JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams boys varsity tennis team was on the losing end Tuesday as Punxsutawney put a damper on Senior Day festivities.
In the first singles match, Punxsy's Mike Blose defeated J.P. Allegretto, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2); at No. 2 singles, Punxsy's Tim Pierce beat Mason Martonik, 6-3, 6-1; at No. 3 singles, Punxsy's Ed Serafin defeated Shane Bickford, 6-1, 6-3; at No. 4 singles, Ryan States defeated Nate Fields, 6-1, 6-2; and in the fifth singles contest, Punxsy's Nick Roberts bested Tommy Imbrogno, 6-0, 6-2.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader girls' softball team recorded a 12-1 victory over the Johnsonburg Ramettes in a five-inning game played on Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
"I'm really happy with it (the game) today," said Johnsonburg coach Jenny Lewis. "I think we showed a lot of improvement since last game. We lost 20-0 last game, and to come out and almost play a whole game [where we] had several hits, different girls on base, [and] we scored a run, we're coming along."
Taylor Schlimm went the distance for ECC, giving up two hits and striking out eight.
Ridgway baseball was hurt by defensive miscues in a 12-1, 6-inning loss to Brockway Tuesday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
Ridgway committed seven errors on the game, many of them coming at critical times which led to Brockway runs.
