Diagnoses of autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have reached unprecedented highs across the nation, with one in 88 children to be diagnosed this year, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study released on March 29.
This has raised concerns and drawn attention to the needs of children and families living with ASD. While autism remains without a definitive cause or known cure, much of the focus at the individual level surrounds treatment, as well as schooling of children with an ASD.
A hundred years of hindsight have allowed for increased research and speculation regarding the sinking of the Titanic in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. Today, stories about the disaster are everywhere, featured in countless books, movies, and newspaper and magazine articles. Different angles of the tragedy are continuously examined, with topics ranging from the fictional story portrayed in the hit blockbuster movie "Titanic," to a recent article discussing the fates of the dogs that were onboard the ship, to ongoing debates related to how to best preserve the site of the wreckage.
Marko M. Bolitiski, 83, of 61 Railroad St., Daguscahonda, died Sunday morning, April 15, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 11, 1929 in Daguscahonda, a son of the late Joseph and Barbara Francis Bolitiski.
On July 3, 1954 in Oakland, Maryland, he married Mary Ellen Jordan Bolitiski, who survives.
Ridgway softball lost 8-2 in a home matchup with Coudersport Friday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Coudersport would strike for a single run in the first inning as Brianna Majot would walk to lead off the game. Majot advanced to second and third on wild pitches before advancing home on a groundout off the bat of Kiersten Counts to give the Lady Falcons a 1-0 lead.

BRADFORD â€“ On Friday morning, the University of Pittsburgh's Bradford campus received a bomb threat similar to those that have been plaguing the university's main campus for the past two months.
According to UPB Director of Communications and Marketing Pat Cercone, at 10:30 a.m. Friday the main campus received an email stating there was a bomb in Hanley Library on the Bradford campus.
James A. Shaver, M.D., died Friday, April 13, 2012, beloved husband of Kathleen R. Shaver; father of James A. Shaver, Jr., M.D. (Leigh Anne), Ellen Albers (Ken), and John Shaver; grandfather of James, Oscar, Henry and Bridget Shaver and Timmy and Auggie Albers; brother of the late John Henry Shaver.
Donald R. "Captain" Allegretto, 69, of 879 Rasselas Rd., Wilcox, died Friday morning, April 13, 2012 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born on Aug. 25, 1942 in Buffalo, N.Y., son of the late Raymond and Betty Sample Allegretto. On Aug. 5, 1967 in St. Ann's Church, Wilcox, he married Katherine "Kaki" Gelsick, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of Rasselas, having attended Wilcox and Johnsonburg schools. He was a Vietnam-era veteran of the U.S. Army, serving overseas as an SP4 with Co. B, 166th Eng. Bn.
Pitching was the order of the day at Sandy Beach.
Johnsonburg had more than enough of it for the victory.
Johnsonburg used a trio of pitchers for a 5-0 Ram win over Ridgway baseball Thursday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
"Cole (Peterson) threw well, Mitchell (Holmberg) came in and threw a nice game, especially in the fourth inning getting out of it. Quinn (Luhr) pitched well," Johnsonburg coach Jeff Peterson said. "Defensively, we played real well again."
Johnsonburg pitching finished with a combined 13 strikeouts of Ridgway hitting.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ A 17-hit outburst Thursday afternoon fueled a 15-10 win over rival Johnsonburg for the Lady Elkers' first win of the 2012 season.
Ridgway starting pitcher Taylor Roseto, going the distance for the first time this season after being on a pitch count due to injury rehabilitation, put up nine strikeouts and set down the side in order three times en route to her first win of the year.
