Union rep: 'Not budging'

April 19, 2012

Members of Local Labor Union 2448 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers [IAMAW] continued their strike Thursday against Clarion Sintered Metals [CSM] in order to obtain their goals of less mandatory overtime, a better pension plan and the same percentage wage for workers.
According to Robert D. Miller, a business representative of District Lodge No. 98 of IAMAW, negotiations have been nonexistent.

PAWS Gala to benefit Elk County Humane Society

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Humane Society is hosting a PAWS Gala on Saturday, April 28 in an effort to raise funds for a new medical room at their shelter.
This is the organization's third gala, with its inaugural gala taking place in 2004 and a smaller gala held in 2007. All proceeds will benefit the society will be used for the medical room and general upkeep of the shelter, located on E. Eschbach Road in St. Marys.

Pitching, extra base hits give Rams 3-2 win over Cardinals

JOHNSONBURG – Solid pitching and extra bases were the name of the game Thursday as the Johnsonburg Rams took a 3-2 win over visiting DuBois Central Catholic to extend their opening run to 8-0 on the season.
Sophomore starting pitcher Cole Peterson went the distance for the Rams, scattering two runs on five hits for a complete game victory. Peterson struck out four in the victory and issued only one free pass, an intentional walk in the third inning.

Supervisors discuss zoning issue

West End Grocery at 608 Oak Street in Ridgway Township has put a hold on barbecuing following a complaint from a neighbor.
Store owner Greg Moore attended Tuesday's Ridgway Township board of supervisors meeting in hopes to resolve a zoning dispute that prohibits outdoor cooking for commercial use.
Township resident Lee Briggs voiced her concern over the matter at the beginning of the meeting.

Walter E. Biel

Walter E. Biel, 91, of 3712 Wilcox Rd., Wilcox, died Thursday morning, April 19, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
He was born on Feb. 20, 1921 in Portage, son of the late John E. and Anna Biel Biel. On Dec. 28, 1939, he married Elsie Marie Jordan Austin; she preceded him in death March 11, 1973.
He resided in Wilcox most of his life and attended Wilcox schools. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Rasselas, and the Wilcox Sportsmen's Club. He was an avid woodsman, hunter and fisherman. He loved vegetable and flower gardening and bowling.

Ridgway baseball falls to Smethport, 5-0

A pair of 2-run innings in the middle of the game proved to be enough for Smethport baseball in a 5-0 victory over Ridgway Thursday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.

Lady Crusaders defeat Curwensville

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team improved to 9-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory over the Curwensville Golden Tide Thursday afternoon at Benzinger Park.
The Lady Crusaders used a three-run fifth inning to secure the victory. Elk was up 3-1 at that time.
The Lady Crusaders were led offensively by Rachel Stauffer with a triple and two singles. Taylor DaCanal had a triple and a double. Both Stauffer and DaCanal had two RBIs each. Taylor Schlimm had the other hit for Elk, a single.
