Johnsonburg Rams down Elk County Catholic Crusaders 42-36 to reach 9-A championship game

CLARION – Ridgway is one win from a district championship.
The Elkers' most familiar foe awaits them on Saturday.
Ridgway advanced to the District 9 Class A boys basketball championship game against Johnsonburg with a 57-40 victory over Clarion-Limestone Wednesday night at Tippin Gym on the campus of Clarion University.
The championship game is scheduled for around 8 p.m. Saturday night at Tippin Gym. Ridgway holds a 3-1 series advantage over the Rams this season.

9 counties to upgrade 911 systems

In an effort to implement cost savings and unify 911 services, nine counties in northern Pennsylvania have teamed up to upgrade to a "Next Generation 911 Telephony System and Network."
The counties are Cameron, Clarion, Clearfield, Elk, Forest, Jefferson, McKean, Venango and Warren.
"[The counties] have worked together as one entity to create a regional network and improving technology and operations while saving costs to their individual counties," said Michael C. McGrady, the president of MCM Consulting Group out of McMurray.

PennDOT moving forward with Million Dollar Highway project

ST. MARYS - With the progression of PennDOT's Million Dollar Highway project, PennDOT has begun acquiring properties adjacent to a downtown St. Marys intersection slated to be widened.
According to Marla Fannin, community relations coordinator with PennDOT District 2, the scope of the project is to "provide full-depth reconstruction of the roadway from Wal-Mart to the St. Marys Diamond," with the estimated cost being $11 million.
Included in project plans is the widening of the SR 255/ SR 120 intersection.

For Donachy, a pig makes the perfect pet

KERSEY – Whenever Kersey resident Amy Donachy returns home, her pet, Wilbur, is there to greet her. He knows his name and even comes when she calls him.
Wilbur is not a dog, cat, or other "traditional" pet, though-- he is a pig.
Donachy, 18, explained that she first got Wilbur two years ago after wanting a pig ever since she was a little girl. When her mother finally gave in, her family looked for a pig on the Pennswoods website and found a litter near the Pennsylvania/Maryland border.

St. Marys comic to perform at weekend concert

Area residents attending Saturday’s Kentucky Headhunters/Confederate Railroad concert will also be treated to the comedy stylings of St. Marys native Brad Leviski, who goes by the stage name of “Bubba Bradley.”
Leviski said he had always thought about being a comic, but never really got the opportunity until about three and a half years ago.
"I was working at a bar in Montana. I was the head bouncer. A buddy of mine knew a comic in L.A. and had him come in and do a show. They wanted somebody to warm up the crowd for five minutes and I volunteered," Leviski said.

John E. Darnell III

John E. Darnell III, age 41, of 514 Cherry Ave., Ridgway, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Feb. 29, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born May 23, 1970, in Ridgway, son of John E. Darnell Jr. and Shirley A. (Saline) Darnell.
He had resided in Ridgway for most of his life and was Protestant by faith. He was a graduate of the Elkins High School in Elkins, W. Va. He was a member of the American Legion Post 208, the VFW, and the Elks Club. He served in the U.S. Army and was a peacetime veteran. He had been employed at Metaldyne for 20 years.

Caroline M. McClain

Caroline M. McClain, 89, of 229 Grandview Rd., St. Marys, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 at the Pinecrest Manor after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 14, 1922, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Bernard and Caroline Erich Wright.
On Jan. 13, 1940, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Jay P. McClain, who preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1994.
Mrs. McClain was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Sacred Heart School. She was a member of Queen of the World Church and enjoyed life, her family, and especially her grandchildren.
