JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Area School District Superintendent Dennis Crotzer reported receiving a letter of accommodation from the Pa. Secretary of Education Ronald J. Tomalis during Thursday night's regular board of education meeting.
In the letter, Tomalis congratulated the district for the accomplishment shown by the audit of operations for fiscal years ending June 30, 2008 and 2007.
Crotzer took time in his monthly report to read aloud from the letter issued by the Department of the Auditor General.
U.S. Congressman Glenn 'GT' Thompson, R-Howard, recently outlined his legislative priorities for 2012 as the 112th Congress.
“We start 2012 with momentum. On Dec. 31, 2011, President Barack Obama signed into law a bill I introduced this year, the 'Service Members Telemedicine and E-Health Portability Act,' or 'STEP Act,' which will expand mental and health care access to our nation’s service members," Thompson said.
ST. MARYS – My reflections of Joe Paterno go back to Sept. 26, 1978, when I attended a luncheon in State College at Gatsby's Restaurant. Joe Paterno was in attendance; President Gerald Ford; George H.W. Bush was the national Republican chairman; Governor Dick Thornburgh; Lt. Gov. Bill Scranton; Congressman Bill Clinger were all in attendance at the luncheon. Speakers for this luncheon were President Ford, Congressman Clinger and Joe Paterno.
Harry J. Wolf, age 84, of 401 Valley View Dr., Ridgway, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at the DuBois Nursing Home.
He was born Sept. 28, 1927, in St. Marys, son of the late Herman and Ruth (Miller) Wolf. He married Rose Winters on July 14, 1978, and she survives.
State Rep. Matt Gabler, R-Clearfield/Elk, said creating jobs, particularly in rural areas like his legislative district, and ensuring fiscal responsibility in state spending are top priorities for 2012.
BROCKPORT – The Horton Township Board of Supervisors approved a motion to rename the former Brockport Playground to the Jim Cristini Memorial Park.
Vice chairman Levi P. Donahue made the motion to rename the park and said a sign will be designed in the near future in memory of Cristini.
"I was surprised when I read his obituary of all of the things he had done," said Dan Lines. "We lost a great man."
In other business, a new fire truck for the Horton Township Volunteer Fire Department has arrived, said fire chief Chad Guaglianone.

Women and Handguns, a popular longtime program offered by Elk County's sheriff's department, will enjoy continued success thanks to a $5,000 grant from the National Rifle Association [NRA].
"Several months ago, I was issuing a license-to-carry permit in the office and I wish now I have the individual's name because he certainly deserves a public thanks," said Elk County Sheriff Jeffrey C. Krieg. "He's a middle school teacher in St. Marys and he's very interested in and involved with the National Rifle Association, of which I am also a member.
A lengthy process came to fruition Tuesday as the Elk County Commissioners approved an energy-saving initiative that could save county officials and taxpayers over $500,000 in the next 20 years.
"Bekki Titchner and I have been developing a plan to make the county buildings as energy-efficient as possible," said Jodi Foster, community and economic development coordinator for the county's planning department. "In doing so, we have hired a company called FIT Optimized Solutions to do an energy audit to tell us what the best solutions are for us to make our buildings more energy-efficient.
The Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a license agreement with the West Penn Power company for the West Creek Wetlands classroom with the condition that the electricity magnate approves the construction of restroom facilities.
Elizabeth J. "Betty" Dietz, 86, of 106 Linwood Ave., St. Marys, died on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012 at DuBois Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 15, 1925 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Edward and Lillian Davis Cheatle.
On June 14, 1947 in St. Mark's Church in Emporium, she married James H. Dietz, who survives.
