Elkers move on to district semifinals after 65-48 win

After two years of losing in the district quarterfinal, Ridgway boys basketball can say it's over the hump and among District 9's final four.
Ridgway used a strong last 2:40 of the third quarter to create some distance from Sheffield en route to a 65-48 victory over the Wolverines Friday night in the District 9 Class boys basketball quarterfinal held at Ridgway Area High School.

Rams take care of feisty Coudy, eye Elk County Catholic in semifinals

JOHNSONBURG – The visiting Coudersport Falcons stuck around late in the third quarter Friday night before the Johnsonburg Rams whipped the visitors late in the game for a 54-37 win in the quarterfinal round of the District 9 Class A playoffs.
The Rams will now play Elk County Catholic on Tuesday; it will be the fourth meeting of the teams this season.
Johnsonburg, paced by a 17-point performance by sophomore Cameron Grumley, got off to a lackadaisical start and had difficulty shaking the Falcons until late in the game.

Crusaders knock off Knights 59-38 to advance to semifinals

RIMERSBURG – A poster board hanging on the wall in the gymnasium at Union High School reads "We love the game because every dribble, shot, or pass is an opportunity for disaster or glory." The former was true for the #2 seeded Union Knights on Friday evening as they struggled to get any momentum going and saw their season come to an end, while the latter was true for the #7 seeded Elk County Catholic Crusaders as they led all the way to take a 59-38 win and advance to the semifinals of the District 9 Class A playoffs.

Rep. Glenn Thompson makes campaign stop

ST. MARYS – As part of a four-day, 23-stop, 16-county bus tour covering over 700 miles, U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson's campaign arrived in St. Marys on Friday, where the congressman pressed the flesh with supporters at Gunner's Restaurant as part of his bid for a third term representing Pennsylvania's 5th District.
Thompson said that in his touring the district, jobs, debt, and healthcare have been among the prevalent concerns held by his constituency and expressed to him.

Country bands to entertain at community concert

Area residents will have the opportunity to hear quality live music on Saturday, March 3, when country bands The Kentucky Headhunters and Confederate Railroad will be perform at a community concert at the St. Marys High School auditorium.
The concert, sponsored by St. Marys Auto Body, is being held to give area residents a fun, affordable, family-friendly night out, according to St. Marys Auto Body owner and concert organizer Sandy Buerk.

James M. Kiska

James M. Kiska, 55, of 441 Rightmeyer St., St. Marys, died Feb. 23, 2012 at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born July 3, 1956 in Pittsburgh, son of Chester J. Kiska of Portland Mills and the late Margaret A. “Nancy” McKelvey Kiska.
Mr. Kiska had resided in St. Marys the past 18 years and had attended Chartiers Valley schools. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1972-1978.
