Business Expo to showcase array of vendors

ST. MARYS – With over 40 vendors slated to attend the 2012 Business Expo, organizers are encouraging the public to stop out at the event taking place Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Red Fern in St. Marys from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be representatives of businesses including contractors, energy representatives, educational, home-based businesses, manufacturing, insurance and healthcare, along with many more.
Together, The River 98.9 radio station and the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce have paired up to sponsor the event as in years past.

Valentine's Day Ball held for Pinecrest residents

For about an hour and a half on Saturday afternoon, the sounds of upbeat tunes could be heard at Pinecrest as around 70 residents gathered for the annual Valentine's Day Ball.
The event is held each year by St. Marys Area High School and Elk County Catholic High School students in the Confirmation classes at Queen of the World Parish, Sacred Heart Parish, and St. Mary's Parish. This year 20 students participated in the event, according to Kathy Reuscher, confirmation facilitator.

Crotzer responds to Corbett's announcement

JOHNSONBURG – Following Gov. Tom Corbett's announcement of the budget on Tuesday, Feb. 7, Johnsonburg Area School District Superintendent Dennis Crotzer expects the district to not receive new revenues for the upcoming year.
"Mrs. [Patricia] Calkins and myself are studying the changes on how the funding from the State will come to the school district," Crotzer said.
"I believe we will not be receiving any new revenues, but again we must study the changes more thoroughly.

Patricia L. Cook, 89, of 223 Irving Ave., Ridgway, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Ridgway, the daughter of Everett and Phyllis Shugars Carberry. She married Lawrence K. Cook; he predeceased her on Aug. 29, 1994.
Mrs. Cook resided in Ridgway most of her life, where she was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed her tea time with friends and being with her family. She had been employed at Sylvania in St. Marys.

Ned J. Kopp

Ned J. Kopp, 80, of 313 Welsh St., Kane, formerly of St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 14, 1931 in St. Marys, he was the son of the late William C. and Caroline E. Weber Kopp. On June 6, 1964 in Emporium, he married Marilyn M. Haviland, who died July 4, 2011.
Ned was a mechanic for Airco Speer in St. Marys for many years. He served in the U.S. Army after WWII and during the Korean War, and was part of the St. Marys Serviceman's Detail.

Lady Crusaders down Lady Dutch 47-38 in D9 League play

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch squad a 47-38 District 9 League setback Saturday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders outscored the Lady Dutch 12-7 in the first eight minutes of play and 12-7 in the second quarter to open a 24-14 halftime lead. They led by 11 at the end of three quarters, 33-22. The fourth quarter saw the Lady Dutch outscore ECC 16-14, making the final score 47-38.
