The Ridgway boys basketball seniors have seen the team go from seasons with a losing record to the best record in District 9.
The eight seniors for the Elkers were honored Friday night and closed out the regular-season home slate with a 58-46 win over Coudersport.
The seniors are Eric Matheson, Jordan Lundin, Aaron Sorge, Kyle Kinkead, Alex Oknefski, Tyler Stark, Keith Zawatski and Damon Carlson.
JOHNSONBURG – Brockway scored seven unanswered points in the final 65 seconds Friday night, including a fallaway jump shot from Juliana Vokes with four ticks on the clock for a 42-41 upset win over host Johnsonburg.
Down by a point entering the fourth quarter, Johnsonburg junior Brittany Watts shifted the lead to the Ramettes' favor with a layup at the 6:10 mark for a 35-34 lead.
With the Lady Rovers unable to break through on the other end, junior Rhianon Fowler hit a timely layup with 4:35 to play off an assist from Watts, who threw the ball back in as it was on its way out of bounds.
ST. MARYS – You may not always see them in action, but the members of Elkland Search and Rescue provide vital emergency services in Elk and neighboring counties and across the state.
"We actually are the only Pennsylvania-certified search and rescue team in northwestern Pennsylvania," said Matt Young, current president and deputy chief of Elkland Search and Rescue. "We essentially have from where we are all the way over to Ohio and from Interstate 80 all the way up to New York, is pretty much our coverage area."
BROOKVILLE — Convicted murderer Steven P. Rebert, who was found guilty of two counts of criminal homicide following his jury trial in January, has filed post-trial motions for acquittal or a new trial.
On Jan. 24, the jury found Rebert, formerly of Emporium, guilty of double homicide in the shooting deaths of Victoria Lynn and Wayne Shugar, both 61, whose bodies were found April 12, 2010, in their Coal Tipple Road home, Brockway.
JOHNSONBURG – About 25 concerned Johnsonburg Area School District teachers attended Thursday night's board of education meeting asking the district to conclude a bargaining process that first began in January of 2010.
Teachers Lisa Gustafson and Jesse Schreiber, both proud members of the Johsonburg Area Education Association [JAEA], made statements prior to the regular meeting.
