Victor C. "Wedo" Aiello, 90, of 301 Fairview Ave., Johnsonburg, died Thursday evening, Jan. 12, 2012, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 6, 1921 to Italian immigrants, the late Gennaro and Frances Chirillo Aiello.
He married Vittoria I. Bevacqua on Oct. 18, 1951 in Welland, Ontario, Canada, and she survives
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Johnsonburg Area School District received a clean audit from their financial auditor prior to Thursday night's regular board of directors meeting.
The board was presented with a 20-minute presentation from financial auditor James Alexander of Buffamante Whipple Buttafaro, P.C.
Alexander began the presentation detailing the district's independent auditors report.
Ridgway wrestling continued its strong march through the season with a 43-17 dual win over Punxsutawney Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway's middle and upper weight wrestlers continued to pick up winning results, the Elkers won every match from the 145-pound weight class until the 285-pound weight class.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Johnsonburg Area School District welcomed newly appointed board member Bill Boylan during Thursday night's board of directors meeting.
District Magistrate Tony King administered the Oath of Office to Boylan and returning board member Shane Launer.
A recent ranking from SchoolDigger.com was a cause for concern during Tuesday night's Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors meeting.
"I was looking at the school rankings [Tuesday] based on the PSSA scores, which I know aren't necessarily an accurate portrayal, but I was a little disturbed and I think I know the reason why," said director Kathy Lampman. "We are ranked at 406 out of 683 and we had dropped 290 places from last year and that's just the difference between the two 11th grade classes."
William F. "Bill" Myers, 70, of 301 High Street, Johnsonburg, died on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
He was born on November 4, 1941 in Ridgway, son of the late Francis and Virginia Riekofsky Myers.
He married his wife of 50 years, Virginia "Ginny" Wenner on May 29, 1961 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg. She survives.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life and was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1959.
ST. MARYS â€“ The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team remains undefeated after picking up a 47-29 victory over the visiting Punxsutawney Lady Chucks on Wednesday evening at ECCHS.
"I thought we played a pretty good basketball game," said ECC coach Ken Pistner. "It wasn't real sloppy, and I had us for 14 or 15 turnovers. I thought Punxsy played really hard, too. It was a good basketball game tonight."
Elk Catholic held a 12-5 lead at the end of the first period, was up 23-13 at the end of the second, and 29-22 at the conclusion of the third.
Ridgway Area School District Superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien discussed the impact of the Keystone Exams during Tuesday night's board of directors meeting.
The Keystone Exams are part of Pennsylvania's new system of high school graduation requirements and are designed to help school districts guide students toward meeting state standards by assessing their proficiency in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Literature, English, Composition, Biology, Chemistry, U.S. History, World History, and Civics and Government.
The Ridgway Heritage Council is proud to lend its support with a $2,500 donation to the fundraising effort for restoring the Pennsylvania Railroad Station along North Broad Street, initiated with a $50,000 donation by Dennis Heindl, in partnership with Ridgway Borough.
ST. MARYS - The 2nd Annual Elk County Catholic Alumni Spirit Night is set for Friday evening. This year's event is being held in conjunction with the much-anticipated ECC versus St. Marys Area boys' basketball game.
The cross-town rivals will meet at ECC this year and event organizers are encouraging alums to sport their alma mater's colors of maroon and gold to cheer the Crusaders. The junior varsity game is set for 6 p.m., with the varsity matchup tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
