Municipal authority re-elects Poague as chairman

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Municipal Authority held a reorganizational meeting prior to the regular meeting Tuesday night.
Eric Poague was unanimously re-elected as chairman. Doug Haupright will serve as vice chairman.
Dane Condino will take over as secretary. Condino replaced Richard Smith, who did not seek reelection.
Hud Caldwell Jr. was elected as treasurer.
Ed Gapinski will serve as assistant secretary/treasurer.
Richard Brown was re-elected as solicitor.
Uni-Tec Consulting Engineers Inc. retained their role as engineer.

JoAnn M. Ross

JoAnn M. Ross, 80, of 256 Monterey Ave., Ridgway, died on Monday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2012 at her residence.
She was born Aug. 27, 1931 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Elmer and Anna Anderson.
On July 25, 1953, she married Norman H. Ross, who preceded her in death on May 10, 2006.
She was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a graduate of the Ridgway High School and a graduate of the Augustana Lutheran Pediatric Nursing School in Chicago.

Catholic Charities awarded a grant to support Real Alternatives program

ST. MARYS – Catholic Charities recently received a $6,000 from Women Who Care to support their Real Alternatives Program.
Nanci Mattison, who serves as Director of Catholic Charities, explained that the program is a way to help deter expecting mothers in a crisis situation from abortion.
“In the program we provide counseling and help them look for other options,” Mattison said. “We are a pro-life agency and seek to show them alternatives to abortion, help assist them and realize they can do it as a parent.”

LHU Clearfield offering Marcellus Shale class

CLEARFIELD – Lock Haven University Clearfield Campus is offering an extended education class to teach those looking to work in Pennsylvania's growing gas industry.
"The Marcellus Shale Industry Overview will be a 30-hour class about the geology and industry of Marcellus Shale and gas rich shale units, plus the business aspects of gas drilling. This course is designed for anyone seeking to learn more about the industry as a citizen, student, or professional," as stated in an LHU Clearfield press release.

Patricia A. Green

Patricia A. Green, 55, of 691 Pontzer Ave., St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born March 15, 1957 in DuBois, a daughter of the late Gustie Anderson and Agnes Thielges Anderson Grier.
On July 8, 2002 in Johnsonburg, she married Clifford Green, who survives.

Carmen L. Martino, 66, of 34 West Cardott St., Ridgway, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at his residence.

Borough considers donating to Pennsy Station

The Borough of Ridgway will look into contributing to the restoration of the Pennsy Railroad Station campaign fund after Mayor Guillermo Udarbe made the proposal during Monday night's council meeting.
"The renovation of the North Broad Street train station is under way," Udarbe said. "You should go and take a good look at it when you get the time to see the improvements. The [Ridgway] Heritage Council donated $2,500 to the train station renovation project and the Borough should also play an important role in this project."

Crusaders hand Dutchmen 67-47 D9 League setback

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch a 67-47 District 9 League setback last night at the ECCHS gym.
The Crusaders were able to use a quick start to jump out to an 18-4 lead after the first eight minutes of play. The Dutch were never able to recover as the Crusaders went on for the victory.
“We had a good start but I thought we played a little loose in the fourth quarter,” said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub. “We were shooting the ball pretty well and when you make them they are all good shots.”

Bertha M. Verbeck, 93, of 135 Swift St., Ridgway, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 14, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Jan. 21, 1918 in Medix Run, Benezette Township, daughter of the late Adiel and Mary (Lynch) Verbeck.

Eagle Scout project gives archery league a place of their own

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Community Paper Punchers Archery League now has a place of their own to practice thanks to Jason Dubler of Johnsonburg and a project he completed to attain the Eagle Scout Award.
Dubler is a member of Boy Scout Troop 83 of Johnsonburg.
“There is a league here every Tuesday,” Dubler said, “and before this was here they used to have to go to St. Marys to practice.”
