Coaches vs. Cancer nets over $800 at Holiday Tournament

ST. MARYS – Even though donations received in this year's Coaches vs. Cancer campaign at the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament fell short of matching last year's total of $1,200, more than $800 was still able to be raised to benefit the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, according to Roben Daghir, volunteer survivor for outreach and awareness.
"It was wonderful," Daghir said of the community's continued support of promoting cancer awareness.

Johnsonburg wins boys county tournament title

ST. MARYS – Ridgway ended 2011 with a win in the Elk County Holiday Tournament over Johnsonburg.
Johnsonburg returned the favor to end 2012.
The Rams scored the final 13 points in the fourth quarter to take a 36-23 win over Ridgway in the championship game of the tournament Saturday night at St. Marys Area High School.
It's Johnsonburg's second tournament title in four years, the Rams also won the county title in 2009.
"It feels good for the kids I'm sure," Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey said. "I feel very proud that I was able to be a part of this."

Lady Crusaders win county tournament

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team successfully defended their Elk County Girls' Holiday Basketball Tournament crown by defeating the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 44-27 score in the 2012 championship game played Saturday night at St. Marys Area High School.
The Lady Crusaders' defense was the key to the game as they limited the Ramettes to seven points in the second half of play.
"Holding Johnsonburg to seven points in the second half was definitely the key," said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.

Doris M. Hasselman

Doris M. Hasselman, 72, of 633 Evergreen Rd., St. Marys, died comfortably at home on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012 after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 22, 1940 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Robert and Louise Solic Schneider. On Oct. 22, 1960 in the Sacred Heart Church, she married LeRoy G. “Tubby” Hasselman, who survives.
Mrs. Hasselman was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School. She was a member of the Queen of the World Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing and playing cards with her friends.
