Helen B. Swanson, formerly of Ridgway, died Sept. 9, at her daughterâ€™s home in Chicago, Ill.
She was three days shy of her 91st birthday. Born Sept. 12, 1921, to Gustaf and Ruth (Winslow) Brumberg in Horton Township, she moved to Ridgway with her family when she was two. They were active members of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Following high school graduation, she worked for the phone company in Ridgway, and then at the Market Basket, where her father was the manager.
JOHNSONBURG â€“Â Johnsonburg volleyball won 3-1 (25-13, 26-24, 22-25, 25-19) over Curwensville Tuesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
â€śIt was something that we needed as a team to play consistently enough to come ahead,â€ť Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey said. â€śI thought sometimes we played well and some parts during the game we would fall asleep or our passing would leave us. I thought we did some good things.â€ť
The Ramettes came out strong in the first set and took in it easy fashion by a 25-13 margin.
The Ridgway boys soccer team lost 3-2 to Coudersport in action Tuesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Coudersport took the lead with a strong first 20 minutes of play with a pair of goals for a 2-0 lead.
â€śWe gave it up at the beginning,â€ť Ridgway coach Todd Voss said. â€śUnfortunately, those things happen. Weâ€™re on the edge, itâ€™s crazy. We canâ€™t lose any more games.â€ť

The Ridgway Elker golf team handed the St. Marys Area Flying Dutch squad a 204-226 loss Tuesday in a match played at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course.

A Ridgway man incarcerated since July 24 on arson and related charges, as well as charges of attempted murder and assault, was in Elk County Court Monday appealing for a reduction in bail so that he may be released from jail and return home while awaiting trial.
Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of 76 Long Level Rd., Ridgway, waived arraignment and entered not guilty pleas Monday in five separate cases against him, including a 2010 Ridgway arson, a 2008 Johnsonburg arson, the assault of a Ridgway man, firearms possession by a convicted felon, and a drug offense.
BRANDY CAMP - Members of area fire departments gathered at D&T Towing and Recovery in Brandy Camp over the weekend for a technical heavy truck extrication class.
After coursework and discussion on Saturday, members of Crystal, Fox Township, Jay Township and Brockway fire departments got a chance to put into practice what they learned during simulations of passenger vehicles colliding with a tractor-trailer and a tanker truck.
This Saturday's spaghetti dinner for the "Schutz Family Benefit: Remembering Taylor," is being put on by the Ridgway Elks and the Elk County Sheriff's Department headed up by Sheriff Jeff Krieg and J.R. Geitner, manager of the Ridgway Elks.

Alan R. â€śDickâ€ť Hummel, 67, of Winchester, Va., died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012 in Winchester.
He was born April 19, 1945 in Port Huron, Mich., the son of the late Frederick D. and Jane Irene Cataline Hummel. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1965 to 1969. He earned a bachelorâ€™s degree in Chemistry and also one in Business in 1972 from Salem College and a master of business administration degree from Shenandoah College and Conservatory in 1985.
Gertrude â€śGertyâ€ť Fitch, age 85, of Terra Cotta Road, Johnsonburg, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012 at the Lutheran Home at Kane after an illness of the past six months.
She was born Oct. 9, 1926 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late John and Julia (Bedner) Raubenstrauch
On Oct. 19, 1946, she married Fred D. Fitch; he preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 2006.
