Ridgway defeats ECC, 58-48

ST. MARYS – The gymnasium at Elk County Catholic High School was the place to be on Saturday night and open seats were hard to come by as basketball fans came out to watch the much anticipated match-up between the resilient Crusaders and the undefeated Ridgway Elkers. The two teams did not disappoint as they battled back and forth for the lead throughout the contest until Ridgway finally put the game away in the fourth quarter to secure their first win at ECC since December 2002.

Flutterbye able to extend their camp another day

Flutterbye is a support program created by the Community Nurses, Inc., to help children cope with the loss of a loved one.
The program reaches out to grades kindergarten through 12th grade. The support program meets monthly for meetings and yearly for a day camp. Because of a grant awarded by Women Who Care, the program will be extended to a two-day camp in the summer of 2012.

Frac tank rescue simulations enacted in weekend training program

Workers in the Marcellus Shale industry and a local well fire department were on hand Saturday for a confined space entry and rescue training and certification program held at the Ridgway Firemen's Carnival Grounds.
During the program, simulations and drills were held that practiced rescuing injured workers from a frac tank. An actual frac tank, a tank that is used to hold water used in the hydrofracturing process that extracts natural gas from shale formations deep beneath the earth's surface, was used as part of the activities.

New Year, new class

Keeping up with consistent demand over the years, the Ridgway YMCA is installing a new class at its facility along North Broad Street in downtown Ridgway.
Jennifer Stolburg is back at the site teaching a new-age step aerobic class.
"Step & Sculpt is a new cardio fitness class that is being offered," said Mary Lynne Bellotti, executive director at the Ridgway YMCA. "This new program is designed for both men & women and is suitable for all ages. This exercise session is done to choreographed rhythmic music and is step designed.

John A. Fedus

John A. Fedus, 79, of 7965 Laurel Mill Rd., Ridgway, died Sunday morning, Jan. 8, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born May 15, 1932, in Johnsonburg, son of the late Charles and Anna (Bedner) Fedus.
On Sept. 29, 1956, he married Edith T. Strauss, who survives.
He had resided in Ridgway for the last 55 years and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Post #208. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean conflict.

James Cristini

January 9, 2012

James Cristini, age 90, of Play Ground Road Brockport, died Jan. 6, 2012 at his residence.
He was born Sept. 14, 1921, in Indiana, Pa., son of Augusto and Maria Bartoletti Cristini.
He was married to Virginia M. Zimmerman, she preceded him in death on May 8, 2009.
