ECC clinches AML North Division in rout over Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – In a tale of two halves Friday night, Elk County Catholic (13-2) pulled off a double-whammy by clinching the Allegheny Mountain League [AML] North Division and halting a 7-game winning streak by Johnsonburg (9-6) with a 52-29 road win.
The Lady Crusaders were fueled by Kristy Hanes' double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, including seven straight points in 34 seconds in the fourth quarter that put the game away for good. Hanes scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter during a 2-minute stretch to secure the game.

Lady Elkers fall to DCC

In a game full of long runs, DuBois Central Catholic held the Elkers scoreless for over 13 minutes in the second and third quarters during a stretch which saw the Lady Cardinals pull away in a 53-21 win over Ridgway in an AML South girls basketball game Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.

With a November 2011 bentonite spill in Johnsonburg's Silver Creek highlighting the potential environmental hazards posed by Marcellus Shale activity, Wildlife Conservation Officer Tom McMann of the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) spoke at January's meeting of the Elk County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs about the environmental effects of Marcellus Shale activity on Elk County's wilds and wildlife. In an interview Tuesday, McMann discussed further the pros and cons the industry poses to animal habitats and aquatic resources, as well as what he has seen of both in Elk County so far.

DA seeking death penalty

BROOKVILLE — As the penalty phase for Steven P. Rebert began Thursday — two days after he was found guilty of killing Wayne and Victoria Shugar, both 61, in their Coal Tipple Road residence in April 2010 — District Attorney Jeffrey Burkett reminded the jury that it’s not all about whether it sends Rebert to prison for the rest of his life, or it sentences him to death.
The phase during which the jury explored Rebert’s innocence or guilt is over: The jury found him guilty of killing the Shugars, Burkett said, “and now, it’s not just about Steven Rebert anymore.

Dennis R. Perkins

Dennis R. Perkins, 74, of Mill Street, Ridgway, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at the Elk Regional Health Center following a short illness.
He was born Aug. 6, 1937 in Millpoint, W.V., son of the late Carnie (Perkins) Poage.
He was a graduate of Johnsonburg High Class of 1956. He was a retired maintenance man last employed at Dickinson Mental Health. He enjoyed cards, darts, reading and being in the woods.

Freda B. Gearhart

Freda B. Gearhart, 90, of Greenville, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at Nugent Convalescent Home in Hermitage.
She was born June 22, 1921 in Richardsville, daughter of the late Fred and Lillian Pierce VanNorman. She married Orlan K. Gearhart, he preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 2010.
She was a member of the Central Community Church in Transfer. She was a member of the West Salem Fireman Women's Auxiliary where she had served as past president; the Jolly Hill Top Club; Grandmas Club; Sunshine Club; Ladies Aid Club; and the Seniors for Christ group at her church.
