Ridgway boys basketball continued its undefeated run with a 42-31 victory over DuBois Central Catholic Tuesday night in an AML South matchup at Ridgway Area High School.
JOHNSONBURG – The Rams (9-2) rebounded Tuesday with a 54-31 win over struggling Brockway (4-8) to right the ship at the midway point of the regular season.
Backed by a 17-point outburst from sophomore guard Cole Peterson, the Rams overcome a brief sluggish start to outlast the Rovers while relying on a stifling defense in the second half to put the game away.
ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders improved their record to 7-5 on the season with a 51-36 non-league victory over the Curwensville Golden Tide last night at the ECCHS gym.
After trailing 18-17 at the half, Elk Catholic went on to outscore the Golden Tide by a 34-18 margin in the second 16 minutes of play.
“Tonight was a team effort and a good win,” said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub. “We were able to get away with a poor first half.”
Area residents and members of the Elk County Tea Party discussed the negative affects of federal Senate Bill 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act, that reportedly would legalize the U.S. government's detainment of citizens possibly linked with terroristic activity.
A 926-page bill in total, two small sections have raised ire across the nation, and apparently Elk County: Sections 1031 and 1032.
Elk County commissioners Tuesday morning announced a "Shopping for Electricity" workshop being offered by Penn State Cooperative Extension scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 2, in Ridgway.
"This would be a good asset for community education," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg.
The class is being offered in conference room No. 2 of the Elk County Courthouse Annex starting at 1 p.m. Feb. 2.
A second class is scheduled is scheduled for 6 p.m. the same day in the classroom of the 911 Center in Smethport.
BROOKVILLE — The son of a slain Snyder Township couple took the witness stand Tuesday during the second day of Steven P. Rebert's double-homicide trial, saying that when he arrived at his parents' home and found both of their vehicle parked in the driveway, he began fearing the worst.
Jason Shugar, a son of the victims — Victoria and Wayne Shugar, Coal Tipple Road — said he last spoke to his parents Saturday, April 10, 2010, and described how his mother had asked him to help with removing some items in a second-floor room that the couple wanted to refurbish.

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Municipal Authority held a reorganizational meeting prior to the regular meeting Tuesday night.
Eric Poague was unanimously re-elected as chairman. Doug Haupright will serve as vice chairman.
Dane Condino will take over as secretary. Condino replaced Richard Smith, who did not seek reelection.
Hud Caldwell Jr. was elected as treasurer.
Ed Gapinski will serve as assistant secretary/treasurer.
Richard Brown was re-elected as solicitor.
Uni-Tec Consulting Engineers Inc. retained their role as engineer.
JoAnn M. Ross, 80, of 256 Monterey Ave., Ridgway, died on Monday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2012 at her residence.
She was born Aug. 27, 1931 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Elmer and Anna Anderson.
On July 25, 1953, she married Norman H. Ross, who preceded her in death on May 10, 2006.
She was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a graduate of the Ridgway High School and a graduate of the Augustana Lutheran Pediatric Nursing School in Chicago.
