William R. Penfield Sr.

March 15, 2011

William R. Penfield Sr., 87, formerly of Ridgway and Kane, died Monday morning, March 14, 2011, at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Brockway, son of the late William J. and Dorothy (Woods) Penfield.
He married Erma Jean Griffith on Jan. 19, 1946. She preceded him in death on May 17, 1974.

Linda A. (Gordon) DeSalve

Linda A. (Gordon) DeSalve, 56, of DeSalve Road, Penfield, died at her home on Saturday, March 12, 2011.
She was born April 22, 1954 in Philadelphia, daughter of the late William and Margaretta (Gill) Gordon. On July 15, 1972 she married Lon A. DeSalve Sr., who survives.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, she lived in Ridgway from 1969 through 1972, and spent the remainder of her life in Penfield. She was a graduate of Ridgway High School, Class of 1972.

Bush finishes eighth at 119 pounds, earns second PIAA medal

HERSHEY – Corey Bush of Ridgway finished eighth at 119 pounds at the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships which concluded Saturday at Giant Center in Hershey.
“My goal was to finish higher, but a medal is pretty good,” Bush said.
It is Bush’s second state medal after a fourth-place finish last year at 103 pounds.
“It’s rare to get two and still have a shot at another one next year,” Gerber said. “I told him, 'Let’s do this again next season and finish higher up the podium.' It’s well within his reach and he works hard, I think it can happen.”

Elk County Catholic advances with 58-49 win over Serra Catholic

CLARION – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the second round of the PIAA Class A Tournament with a 58-49 victory over the Serra Catholic Eagles Friday night at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Crusaders will meet Lincoln Park Charter on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Clarion University. Lincoln Park defeated West Middlesex by a 70-35 score.
In last night’s game, the Crusaders used an 8-2 run late in the third period and outscored the Eagles 21-13 in the fourth quarter to record their victory.

Bishop Guilfoyle defeats Lady Crusaders 36-19

ALTOONA – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders' season came to on end on Saturday afternoon at the Altoona Area High School gym, as they were defeated in the opening round of the girls' PIAA Class A State Championship tournament by two-time defending state champion Bishop Guilfoyle. The Lady Marauders handed the Lady Crusaders a 36-19 loss in that opening-round game.

Bush guaranteed state medal, Wolfe rounds out tournament

HERSHEY – Ridgway wrestler Corey Bush has guaranteed himself a state medal after action Friday at the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships while Johnsonburg’s Jesse Wolfe goes home with a 1-2 finish.
Bush faces off against Nate Giorgio of Schulykill Valley in the seventh-place bout Saturday as that round begins at 12:30 p.m.

Maude Helen Wilson

Maude Helen Wilson, 73, of 78 Spring Brook Dr., Ridgway, died Wednesday evening, March 9, 2011 at UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a lengthy illness.
She was born Aug. 19, 1937 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Theodore R. and Hazel A. (Sherman) Salberg.
She married Marshall E. Wilson on March 17, 1956, who survives.

Robert J. "Bobby" Rupprecht

Robert J. "Bobby" Rupprecht, 79, of Ridgway, died peacefully Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Conn.
He was born in St. Marys, the son of the late Aloysius (Alois) and Mary Rupprecht. He married Sheila Rupprecht, who survives.
He lived many years in the greater Fairfield, Conn. area prior to moving back to Pennsylvania. He was a retired employee of Norwalk Powdered Metals.

Florence L. Steis, 88, of Miamisburg, Ohio, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at her residence under the care of Hospice of Dayton.
She was born Sept. 12, 1922 in Brandy Camp, the daughter of Gelindo and Julia Castina Benigni.
She was a former resident of Brandy Camp and Coraopolis.

Thomas Alvin Terwilliger

Thomas Alvin Terwilliger, 82, of 19 Hiram St., Brookville, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at the Veterans Hospital in Oakland.
He was born December 5, 1928 in Cadogan Township, son of the late Homer and Mildred Bortz Terwilliger.
He had made his home with Judith Baumgratz for many years. She preceded him in death in 1997.
He was Methodist by faith and enjoyed hunting, camping and especially fishing as well as spending time with his family.
He had been employed at Stackpole Carbon as a die setter. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served during the Korean War.
