March 29th
JOHNSONBURG â The Johnsonburg track and field team heads into the new season with returning state qualifiers and improving younger athletes.
âWe didnât really lose too many seniors so weâre not really in a rebuilding year yet,â Johnsonburg coach Rene Timm said. âWeâre still kind of picking up from where we were last year. Weâre seeing a lot of improvement from kids that have been out the last couple years. Everyone just keeps getting better and better. Weâve got some new faces out too and some returning kids.â
Mary T. Zelehoski, 83, of Elk Towers, St. Marys, and formerly of Johnsonburg, died Monday morning, March 28, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
She was born Nov. 10, 1927, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Ambrose and Susan Auman Fledderman.
She married Chester L. Zelehoski on Aug. 12, 1947, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1966.
She resided in St. Marys for the past several years and had lived in Johnsonburg for over 50 years. She was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1945.
March 28th
Corabel Nelson Weissenfluh, 92, of 432 Kearsarge Ave., Ridgway, died Saturday morning, March 26, 2011, at her residence. She was born May 2, 1918 in Warren, daughter of the late Arnold C. and Agnes (Halberg) Nelson. She married Lyle E. Weissenfluh on Aug. 21, 1942; he preceded in her death on July 28, 1999.
She had resided in Ridgway for most of her life and was a member of the Faith United Church of Christ where she directed the choir for many years and was a teacher of piano. She moved to Ridgway in 1923 where she attended the public schools from which she graduated in 1935.
M. Jean Gigliotti, 82, of 101 North Mill St., Ridgway, and formerly of Wilcox, died Saturday morning, March 26, 2011 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys following a short illness.
She was born March 2, 1929, daughter of Raymond and Mary Anderson McConnell.
She married Robert Fowler on March 14, 1946 and he died in 2002. She married Natale Gigliotti and he died April 5, 1992.
She resided in Ridgway for three years and Allentown for 20 years. She attended Harding Jr. High School in Philadelphia.
March 26th
Larry Eugene Blake, 63, of Ridgway, died on Feb. 28, 2011 in Ridgway.
He was born June 13, 1947, in Butler, son of the late Russell Blake and the late Florence (Bauldoff) Bresnahan.
He served in the Army Reserve for 14 years and enjoyed hunting, fishing, wine-making, and grilling. He was a member of the American Legion, Ridgway, and worked as a maintenance and construction worker. Larry's wish for family and friends, whether close or out of touch, was to know he cherished them.
March 25th
The Winter Athletic Awards program honoring the winter sports athletes at Elk County Catholic High School was held on Wednesday evening. The program opened with an invocation by Father Ross Miceli, followed by the welcome by ECC Athletic Club President Chris Schneider. Principal Sandy Florig gave an overview of the program, followed by acknowledgements by Athletic Director Aaron Straub.
March 24th
Jerome E. Gerg Sr., 81, of 345 Toby Rd., Kersey, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at his residence after a brief illness.
He was born March 9, 1930 in Dagus Mines, son of the late Gerald and Anna Bauer Gerg.
On Jan. 20, 1955, in Pittsburgh, he married Nancy L. Smail, who preceded him in death on May 25, 2007.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Boniface School. He was a retired employee of Dick Eazor Chevrolet in Brockway.
Martha E. Gardner, age 95, of 4639 Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway died Tuesday at UPMC-Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a brief illness.
She was born April 10, 1915 in Ridgway daughter of the late Elmer and Susan (Wilson) Gardner. She had resided in Ridgway all of her life and was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Church retired women. She had been employed by Stackpole Carbon Company, the Elliott Company, Quality Components, and the Ridgway School District.
Edward C. "Charlie" Krise, 74, of 72 Erie Ave., St. Marys and formerly of 1200 Million Dollar Highway, Kersey, died on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at UPMC MonteïŹore Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
He was born June 26, 1936 in Ridgway, a son of the late Oden and Christine Bellotti Krise.
March 23rd
Bruce Edward Butler, age 76, of Asaph Run Rd., Wellsboro, formerly of Ridgway, passed away March 21, 2011 at the Williamsport Regional Medical Center.Â
He was the husband of Leona Whitfield Butler whom he married July 22, 1995 in Wellsboro. Bruce was born Dec. 18, 1934 in Wellsboro, the son of the late Max and Charlotte Whitney Butler. Before retiring, Bruce was owner/operator of Butlerâs Hardware in Ridgway. He was a member of the Asaph United Methodist Church, the BPO Elks in Ridgway, the Ridgway Boro Council, American Legion, V.F.W. and the Loyal Order of the Moose.Â
