Township raises taxes on migrant workers

WILCOX – The Jones Township Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of raising the earned income tax of out-of-state workers to one percent during Monday night's meeting.
This township raised the earned income tax by .5 percent.
"Currently our ordinance allows for .5 percent to be collected from out-of-state workers," said chairman Mike DePonceau. "Do we want to raise this to one percent? Residents in most Pennsylvania municipalities pay one percent of earned income tax, which is split between municipalities and school districts."

William E. "Bill" Lyle

William E. "Bill" Lyle, age 73, of McCain Street in Brockway, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center
He was born May 5, 1938, in Brockway, son of Mary Katherine Lyle.
On July 17, 1960, he married Caroline Caggiano, she survives.
He was a member at St. Tobias in Brockway, and a member of the S.O.I. Club and the Sportsmens Club, both in Brockway.
Bill enjoyed racing on every level, from the local ranks all the way up through NASCAR. He also enjoyed playing cards and fishing.

Verne Cuthbert Bixby

Verne Cuthbert Bixby, 89, peacefully entered on to eternal life on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at her home in Wallingford. She was the wife of Jack W. Bixby with who she celebrated her 65th wedding anniversary on Aug. 17, 2011.
Born in Philadelphia on April 14, 1922, she was the daughter of the late W. Earl and Verna Bressler Cuthbert. Verne was a 1940 graduate of Ridgway High School and a 1945 graduate of Clarion University.

Ridgway football downs Smethport

It was a clean sweep for Eric Matheson Saturday night.
Matheson had all 28 of Ridgway's points as Ridgway won its home opener 28-7 over Smethport at Memorial Field in Ridgway.
Matheson had four total touchdowns and four extra points. Ridgway coach Mark Heindl said Matheson's determination is something the other players are trying to input into their own effort.
"Eric is a hard-nosed kid. He's one of those kids that will do anything at any time for anybody to help the team win," Heindl said.

Ridgway wins Elk Co. Volleyball Tournament

ST. MARYS – The Ridgway Lady Elkers captured the 2011 Elk County Volleyball Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Elk County Catholic High School gymnasium.
The Lady Elkers won the 15th annual event by defeating the ECCHS Lady Crusaders two games to one in the best-of-three finals.
In the consolation game, the Johnsonburg Ramettes took third place by defeating the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch 30-24.
In pool play, Elk Catholic finished the morning play with a 5-1 record. Ridgway was 4-2, while the Ramettes were 3-3 and the Lady Dutch 0-6.

Ridgway boys soccer won 4-1 in the consolation game over Johnsonburg Saturday morning at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.

Lady Elkers fall to Lady Tide

The Ridgway Lady Elkers lost 3-1 to Curwensville in girls soccer action Saturday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
After being tied at 1-1 entering halftime, a pair of Curwensville goals ultimately doomed the Lady Elkers’ chances of a victory.
Ridgway struck quickly and within two minutes, the Lady Elkers had a corner kick. Amanda Maddalena struck the corner kick and had it deflected back to her for a crossing attempt. Rhianon Fowler was able to take advantage of the chaos in the penalty area and bury the ball into the net for a goal and a quick 1-0 lead.

Residents remember 9/11

Many residents gathered on the lawn of the Ridgway American Legion Post 208 Sunday afternoon to honor and remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
The ceremony began with Striking of the Four Fives introduced by Ben Brendel, master of ceremonies and member of the Ridgway Military Honor Detail.

Kenneth L. Bedford

Kenneth L. Bedford, 91, of Old Portage Road, Emporium, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at the Elk Haven Nursing Home of St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 16, 1920 in Driftwood, a son of the late Percy H. and Matilda "May" Bedford.
He was raised in Johnsonburg, but lived most of his life in New York and came back to Pennsylvania in 2008.

William Harold Covert Jr

William Harold Covert Jr., 82, of 302 Vernon Ave., Ridgway, died Friday, September 9, 2011, at his residence.
He was born March 22, 1929, in East Smethport, the son of the late William H. and Catherine Marie Oviatt Covert Sr. On April 5, 1991, he married Laura Mae Dickinson, who survives.
