Girls golf edged by DuBois

September 28, 2011

Ridgway girls golf had a team score of 247 in its home finale Tuesday at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Senior Brittanei Neubert led the Lady Elkers with a 55. Selena Scarnati had a 58 and Sierra Kos carded a 62. Christine Schauer finished at 72 and Sarah Szczotka finished at 78.
Shannon Truesdale led DuBois with a 51. Corey Pruzinsky was second at 55. Kelly Nowak had a 67 and Katie DeAngelo finished at 70.
Punxsutawney had the lowest score of the six-team field, finishing with a 222.
Truesdale of DuBois was the medalist with her score of 51.

Ramettes down ECC

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg volleyball won 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 20-25, 25-15) over Elk County Catholic Tuesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
"It's a good win for the girls against a good team," Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey said. "They hustled and they played hard. We seemed to be jelling as a team. We still have some things that we have to fix. All in all, they played hard. We minimized our mistakes.

Lady Elkers overwhelm Sheffield, remain undefeated at 8-0

Using timely passing and 29 kills out of 39 attempts, Ridgway improved to 8-0 Tuesday night with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-11) victory over Sheffield.
The Lady Elkers overwhelmed the opposition Tuesday night as they only faced three deficits in the three-set victory; Along with 16 aces on the night, the home team made only four errors as Sheffield averaged just 11 points per set.

Solid Waste Authority tours landfill

FOX TWP. – Tuesday afternoon's meeting of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority was held at the Veolia ES Greentree Landfill in Fox Township. Prior to the meeting, authority members toured the site by bus and received an update about what has been taking place.
The landfill, which was established in 1987 and changed hands several times before coming under its current management, encompasses about 3,000 acres, with between 400 and 500 acres currently active under the facility's permit boundary.

Officials approve policy revisions

Elk County Conservation District officials approved revisions to their personnel policy during Monday night's regular meeting.
The new Conservation District employee handbook contains 21 additional pages of policies, an improvement to its past six-page handbook.

Margaret B. Scaccia

September 28, 2011

Margaret B. Scaccia, 88, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Railroad Street, Daguscahonda, died on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born February 27, 1923 in Daguscahonda, a daughter of the late Joseph and Barbara Frances Bolitiski.
On June 25, 1943 in Daguscahonda, she married the late Henry Scaccia, who preceded her in death in 1983.

Big Buck Contest better than ever

ST. MARYS - "Large or small, we want 'em all."
That's the theme of this year's 7th Annual Big Buck Contest, which promises to be better than ever with a new scoring system for bucks and a contest for readers of The Daily Press, The Ridgway Record and The Kane Republican every week.
Darlene Coder, publisher of the three newspapers, explained several changes to this year's contest that she said would benefit both hunters and readers.

Johnsonburg finishes second as a team at districts

BRADFORD – The Johnsonburg Rams Golf Team placed second in the District 9 Championships at Pine Acres Country Club.
The team of Calvin Christoff, Cameron Grumley, Luke Shreffler, and J.P. Allegretto carded a team total of 336 to claim runner-up honors; defeating the Bradford Owls by two strokes, but falling short of team champion Punxsutawney, who shot a 332. Only nine of the 24 schools competing in the District Championships qualified for the team portion of the competition, including Ridgway and Elk County Catholic.

Ridgway girls soccer used a second-half goal for the difference in a 3-2 win over St. Marys Monday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School in Ridgway.
“I knew coming in this was going to be a hard game,” Ridgway coach Greg Maddalena said. “It’s the third time we’ve seen them. I told the girls it’s going to be an 80-minute game. They (St. Marys) made some adjustments, they’re not a bad team at all, they’re a very good team. They played well. We just have to step up to that challenge and raise our level, play as a team and we’ll come out winners.”

Monitoring project gathers baseline data

The Elk County Conservation District held their regular meeting Monday night to discuss the progress of the Elk County Monitoring Project.
Watershed specialist Kim Bonfardine announced that data loggers have been deployed and have recorded two weeks worth of baseline data in the Big Mill Creek and Bear Creek watersheds.
Bonfardine plans to have all 12 data loggers in Elk County streams by October.
Project interns have built six housing units for the data loggers.
