The high power hunting rifle event completed the second day of three days of competition Friday afternoon at the Ridgway Rifle Club as part of the NRA National Silhouette Championships.
Luke Johnson (Marysville) had a score of 34 and was the match winner. Mark Pharr (Round Rock, Texas) was second and Angelica Kuess Davila (Laredo, Texas) was third with a 33.
KERSEY – As patrons stroll the Elk County Fairgrounds this week, they might be interested to know that several organizers have been around since the event's inception in the early 1970s.
Ernest Mattiuz, vice president of the Elk County Farm Bureau, has been around since the third county fair and fondly remembers the constant evolution with ease.
Unofficially, the fair started out in 1974 as a weekend event held at the Kersey Community Center. The following year, the event was held behind the building and it was turned into a weeklong event in 1976.
St. Leo Magnus Roman Catholic Church parish will honor samaritans Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Church in St. Marys.
Among the honorees will be Helen Rohr, the secretary at St. Leo's; she will be receiving the bishop's commendation for service medal.
"She served here as the parish secretary for the past 35 years," said Brian Vossler, pastor at St. Leo's. "There will be a ceremony with a light reception at the St. Mary's Church this Sunday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
"We wanted to honor her for her dedication and commitment to the parish here at St. Leo's."
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Thursday, state police formally announced charges against a teenage member of the Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Company stemming from an Aug. 9 fire in Big Run, and said he has also been implicated in several other fires dating back to 2010.
Officials from PSP-Punxsutawney and the district attorney noted, however, that charges filed against Anthony M. Overbeck, 18, Big Run, are not an indictment of other firefighters.
JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District exceeded the PSAA exam targeted test results for the 2010-2011 school year.
Each spring the school district is required by the state to give the exams to students in grades 3-8 and 11.

The NRA National Silhouette Championships continued with the high power events beginning Thursday at the Ridgway Rifle Club high power range.
In high power standard rifle, Angelica Kuess Davila (Laredo, Texas) was the match winner with a score of 33. Fred Kielbowick (Ridgway) was second overall with a 33 and Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) was third with a 33.

Mark Pharr (Round Rock, Texas) was Thursday's match winner in hunting rifle with a score of 34. William Zander (Houston, Texas) was second at 31 and Luke Johnson (Marysville) was third in the open category with a 30.
Members of April School of Dance performed to a sizable crowd Wednesday night at the George A. Swanson Memorial Stage at the Elk County Fairgrounds. The Fair continues today with the Compact Car & Truck Demolition Derby at the Al Dietz Memorial Track at 7 p.m. That event will be complemented by the talent show at the George A. Swanson Memorial Stage at 7 p.m. Other fun events in the evening include the watermelon eating contest at the Starr Pavilion, the Hershey contest in Exhibit Hall No. 1 at 7 p.m., the best Jell-O dessert contest at 8 p.m. in Exhibit Hall No.
BROCKPORT – The Horton Township Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of putting a trailer up for bid during Wednesday night's regular meeting.
"When we bought that paver it came with a trailer," said supervisor Dennis Thompson. "We actually don't need it, so we are going to try and put it up for bid."
The trailer will be put out for bid with a minimum bid of $2,000.
"We are going to put it up for bid because we don't need a second trailer," said chairman Jeff Johnson.
