Borough considers contracting to market water

The Borough of Ridgway held a special council meeting Tuesday afternoon to discuss the option of contracting CSG Consulting, LLC out of Clarion to market the borough's water supply to drilling operators.
CSG Consulting officials propose to market and sell the borough's water on a commission basis at 12.5 percent of gross sales for a period of no less than five years.

Titchner announces grant received for new baler

Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner announced during Tuesday afternoon's Solid Waste Authority meeting that she was successful in obtaining a grant from the Stackpole Hall Foundation to aid in the purchase of a new baler for the Community Recycling Center, which is located at the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys.

County recycling stands to lose significant amount of funding

The county's recycling program stands to lose a significant amount of state funding during the upcoming grant cycle, according to Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner.
"They are going to be cutting the amount of 904 funding that we can expect to get by about 40 percent and we're looking at losing at least $5,000," Titchner informed members of the Elk County Solid Waste Authority on Tuesday afternoon.

Former student excited to follow in her teachers’ footsteps

JOHNSONBURG – As a former Johnsonburg Elementary School student, Kayla Nelson, the new Title I math teacher is inspired to be a part of the Johnsonburg School District as a teacher.
“I am so excited and honored to be part of such a fantastic school district,” Nelson said. “As a former Johnsonburg graduate, it is truly a privilege for me to return to the school district to follow in the footsteps of my elementary school teachers.”

Gas leak sparks fear in Fox Township residents

The Penfield Fire Department reported being called out to Boone Mountain Road in Fox Township Sunday evening by residents concerned with what they thought was a gas well explosion.

Sara "Jayne" Jane Kushner, 69, Wesley Chapel, Johnstown died Aug. 19, 2011, at Conemaugh Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 7, 1942, in Johnstown, daughter of the late Homer and Helen (Chapple) Moore.
She was a 1959 graduate of Central Cambria High School and the Hammond School of Beauty Culture. Jayne was employed at the Penn Traffic Beauty Salon and later owned and operated her own salon. She later co-owned/managed a small convenience store (The Pic-Quik) in Johnstown with her husband “Bob.”

New Kindergarten teacher back in the district he grew up in

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Elementary School’s newest kindergarten teacher is Dan Carnovale. Carnovale is a Johnsonburg Area High School graduate.
Because of growing up in Johnsonburg and attending JAHS, Carnovale said he is glad to be back in the school district he also attended.
“I am very grateful for this opportunity to be back in the school district that I graduated from,” he said. “I know what this school district gave to me and I feel proud to be able to give back to the district, the students, and the community.”

Andrew (Andy) Kaul IV

Andrew (Andy) Kaul IV, 78, of Das Zip Haus, St Marys, a Big Ten wrestling champion and electronics industry pioneer, died Friday, August 26, 2011 after a lengthy illness.
He was born November 10, 1932, in St. Marys, the son of the late Andrew Kaul III and Libby Morrow Kaul.
On October 24, 1959, at the Sacred Heart Church, he married Margaret Imboden, who survives.
Andy was a 1951 graduate of The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., where he was introduced to the sport of wrestling. He was a three-time national prep wrestling champion while at The Hill School.

Angeline R. Sidoni

Angeline R. Sidoni, 81, of 49 Meadowbrook Rd., Ridgway, died Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
She was born November 19, 1929 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late John and Daisy (Manno) Calla.
She married Thomas D. Sidoni on November 3, 1951. He survives.
She had resided in Ridgway since 1952 and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church and was active in the Cursillo movement.
She devoted her life to her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking and had previously cooked at Elk County Catholic High School and for the Office of the Aging.

Mission trip experience meaningful for Kucenski

In late June, Elk County Catholic High School senior Sara Kucenski, of Ridgway, was one of seven western Pennsylvania youth who took part in a week-long mission trip to Honduras to dedicate a water filtration system in El Jaral, Honduras, which the students had spent the previous school year raising money to construct through an organization they formed called Pure Thirst. Pure Thirst worked in conjunction with The Rice Foundation, which was formed by Dr. Jeffrey Rice, and raised over $25,000 to construct the system.
