Ken VanGiesen's family relies on faith to endure pain

KANE – Tom and Sue VanGiesen on Tuesday heard the worst news parents can ever hear.
Their 30-year-old son-- Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen-- had been killed in Afghanistan while serving with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
As can be imaged, it's been a painful four days for the VanGiesen family as plans still are being made for the soldier's funeral in Kane.
Despite their heartache and tears, the VanGiesens both claim their faith in God will see them through these darkest days of their lives.

'Tasting in the Wilds' festival this Saturday

The Ridgway Heritage Council will present the sixth annual 'Tasting in the Wilds' festival this Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. at the Firemen's Grounds along Route 219 in Ridgway.
The festival offers a great opportunity for patrons to sample beverages from eight local wineries and an even larger selection of beers from breweries such as Otto's Pub and Brewery out of State College, Erie-based Erie Brewing Company, Straub Brewery of St. Marys and more.
With a tasting ticket, participants can sample beers by Troegs Brewing Company, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Samuel Adams and many others.

Restoration project on schedule

During Monday night's borough council meeting, Main Street manager Michelle Bogacki reported that the restoration project for the Aiello Building at 205 Main Street in Ridgway, is running according to schedule.
"They are actually on schedule or a little ahead because of the dry weather that we have been having," Bogacki said. "Once they get the roof, windows and building contained they will have their own power source. Right now, they are focusing on the structure."
Bogacki noted that the target date for the building to be structurally sound was projected at six months.

Charles J. Yale

Charles J. Yale, age 63, of 156 Egypt Rd., Brockway, July 20, 2011, at U.P.M.C. - Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born Dec. 26, 1947, in DuBois, son of Velma Yale Holman.
He married Jane Delp on July 7, 1973, she survives.
He was methodist by faith and was a member of both the Brockway and Warsaw Tonwship Sportsmens Clubs. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served during the Vietnam Era
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He was retired and was a Boiler Maker for Local 154.
