George William Gardner

June 10, 2011

George William Gardner, 76 of Peachtree Street Ext., Claremont, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. He is now walking with Jesus. Born May 3, 1935 in Portland Mills, he was the son of the late George William Johnson and Olive Claire Shaffer.
He was a milkman with V.T. Smith Dairy in DuBois, PA for many years and a mechanic with G.S. Fibers-Hickory Springs in Claremont for over 14 years. George was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover. He was an avid NASCAR truck series fan.

Joseph E. Prindle

Joseph E. Prindle, 81, of 212 Alpine St., Ridgway, died Friday, June 10, 2011 at his residence.
He was born Aug. 27, 1929, in Boston, Mass., the son of Walter and Ethel Jenkins Prindle. At age four, following the death of his parents, he was adopted by his mother’s sister, Ruth Bisson and her husband, Ephriam, of Clinton, Mass. He always considered himself truly blessed to have had two sets of loving parents.
In 1962, he married Jeannine Mitchell, who survives.

Rose M. Stebick

Rose M. Stebick, 78, of 131 Woodland Road, St. Marys, died on Friday, June 10, 2011 following an illness of the past few months.
She was born Jan. 6, 1933 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Andrew and Margaret Eckert Hoffman.
On Nov. 14, 1953 in St. Marys Church, she married the late LeRoy H. "Duka" Stebick, who preceded her in death on April 17, 2009.

Steven M. Glatt

Steven M. Glatt, 16, of 301 Erie Ave., St. Marys, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011 in Jay Township as a result of an ATV accident.
He was born Nov. 30, 1994, in Buffalo, N.Y., son of Ronald Glatt of St. Marys and Leslie Neal of St. Marys and her close friend, Steven Caskey.
He had resided in St. Marys since 2003 and had just completed his junior year at St. Marys Area High School.
Steven was a member of the Shiloh Presbyterian Church, was involved in football, track and wrestling in high school, and was a member of summer league baseball.

Larry Luke

Larry Luke, age 72, a resident at Snyder Memorial Home in Marienville, and a lifelong Brockway resident, died Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Warren General Hospital in Warren.
He was born May 20, 1939, in Crenshaw, son of Henry and Matilda Zamboni Luke. He was formerly married to Barbara Miller Luke, she survives.
Larry was baptized Catholic and was a member of the Orient Club in Brockway, Brockport Army/Navy Club and the Horton Tonwship Sportsmens Club.

Wilcox American Legion team dominates Smethport

WILCOX – It was clear from the opening inning who had control of Wednesday's American Legion baseball game.
Wilcox scored four times in the first inning and was dominant throughout in a 10-0, 5-inning win over Smethport at Jones Township Community Park.
"Good pitching, good defense. We had real good defense again," Johnsonburg coach Jeff Peterson said. "Everybody participated, everybody on the team had a chance to play. We're hitting the ball, we're being aggressive on the bases. We're playing well on defense. That's what keeps you in the game, defense keeps you in the game.

Dornisch wins state shot put crown

Elk County Catholic senior Megan Dornisch successfully defended her PIAA Class AA shot put championship on Saturday by winning the 2011 crown.
The PIAA track and field championships were held Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.
Megan won the 2011 event with a throw of 44’8”. Aubree Ray of Middletown took second with a throw of 40’1.25”. Dornisch won her 2010 shot put title with a throw of 45’8.25”.

Elk County Catholic falls in first round of PIAA playoffs

BROCKWAY – The Serra Catholic Eagles ended the Elk County Catholic Crusader season Monday in the first round of the PIAA Class A tournament by an 11-5 score.
The game was played at the Brockway Area High School field.
The Eagles took advantage of a four-run first inning and a five-run sixth inning to record the victory. The Crusaders rallied for three runs in the home half of the seventh, but it was a little too late.

Wilcox Legion team downs Fox Township

WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion team remained undefeated in the early season with a 5-2 victory over Fox Township Monday night at the Jones Township Community Park.
Wilcox (2-0) opened the game with a run in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Cole Peterson reached on an error at second base by Fox Township, an overthrow which led Peterson to second base. He moved to third on a Jesse Reynolds groundout and scored on a bunt by Mitchell Holmberg for the game's first run.
Johnsonburg coach Jeff Peterson said with Fox Township throwing pitcher Bob Vollmer, runs would be at a premium.

Crusaders defend 9-A crown, beat Falcons, 4-2

BRADFORD – The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team successfully defended their District 9 Class A championship Thursday by defeating the Coudersport Falcons by a 4-2 score in a game played at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
All the runs scored in the game came in the fourth inning as ECC scored four in the top half of the inning and the Falcons scored two in the home half of the inning.
“That was another great high school baseball game,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt. “All the runs came in one inning.”
