Ridgway baseball recognizes team with banquet

Ridgway baseball was honored with a banquet Sunday afternoon at Aiello Cafe in Ridgway.
Ridgway senior Ben Jaques was honored with the scholar-athlete award, finishing with a 4.1 GPA.
Varsity head coach Mark Morelli spoke to the team about the close calls the Elkers had this season, noting the team had a chance to win in many games this season and with four more wins, Ridgway could have been preparing for the playoffs with an 8-11 record.

Ridgway hosts Little League Day

Ridgway Little League held its Little League Day Saturday at the little league fields.
On the major league fields, Flickerwood took on Rotary, Johnsonburg then faced Lions. Northwest played Alpha Sintered and Zook went up against Metaldyne.
On the junior league field, Advantage Powders took on Cliffe’s and Texas Hot went up against Northwest Savings. In teeball action, Clean Step took on Rees Dentistry and ION went up against Northstar Aggregates. Anderson & Kime rounded out the teeball slate on the junior league field, taking on Athena Laser Clinic.

Marie A. Dagustine

Marie A. Dagustine, age 91, formerly of 266 West Main St., Ridgway, died Friday at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a brief illness. She was born April 1, 1920 in McKean County, daughter of the late Chester and Lena (Piccirillo) Christoff. She was married to Vito L. Dagustine, he preceded her in death. She had resided in Ridgway all of her life and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church.

Margaret A. "Peggy" Beavers

Margaret A. "Peggy" Beavers, 61, of 337 Pine St., Kane, died Friday afternoon, May 20, 2011 at Lakeview Senior Care & Living Center in Smethport.
Born Jan. 7, 1950 in Kane, she was the daughter of Virgil L. and Marjorie A. Golden Buhl. On Oct. 19, 1968 in Kane, she married Harvie D. Beavers, who survives.
Mrs. Beavers was a registered nurse at the Kane Community Hospital and the Ridgway Community Nurse Service & Hospice. Earlier she was a cook for the Colonial Inn near Kane and a bookkeeper for Shaeffer's Disposal.

Johnsonburg qualifies three for states at district track

KANE – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders and Lady Crusaders both claimed District 9-AA Track and Field titles on Friday afternoon at the Kane Area High School Track and Field complex.

Teresa A. Valigorsky

Teresa A. Valigorsky, age 87, of River Road in Weedville, died Friday, May 20, 2011 at her residence.
She was born on April 9, 1924 in Trenton, N.J. She was the daughter of the late Anthony & Angelina (Viola) Maddalena.
She was a graduate of Ridgway High School and a graduate of St. Vincent School of Nursing in Erie where she became a registered nurse.
On January 31, 1948 at St. Leo’s Roman Catholic Church in Ridgway, she married Dr. Paul J. Valigorsky. He preceded her in death on February 20, 2008.
She was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Force.

Ridgway softball recognizes pair of seniors before home finale

The Ridgway Lady Elkers lost 7-1 to Brockway on Senior Day.
Breezy Mazur and Bri Stenta were the two seniors on the Ridgway softball team this season.

Elk County Catholic dominates Cardinals, 17-1

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders downed the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals 17-1 in four innings on Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park, winning the game on a walk-off double by Ben Daghir.
Pat Brennen went the distance for the Crusaders, working all four innings and giving up one hit, walking four, and striking out five.
"I thought Pat pitched a pretty reasonable game. He pitched pretty well for four innings. We just got some breaks and took advantage of them. We got some runs across the board," said ECCHS coach Fr. Eric Vogt.

ECC holds Spring Athletic Awards program

ST. MARYS – The annual Spring Athletic Awards program for the Elk County Catholic High School spring sports athletes was held on Tuesday evening in the high school auditorium.
The evening opened with invocation by Father Ross Miceli, followed by the welcome by Athletic Club President Chris Schneider. Principal Sandy Florig gave an overview of the evening’s program, followed by the acknowledgements by Athletic Director Aaron Straub.

Lady Crusaders defeat Johnsonburg Ramettes

ST. MARYS – Taylor Schlimm recorded her 11th shutout of the season on Monday afternoon at Benzinger Park as she pitched the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Johnsonburg Area High Ramettes.
Schlimm gave up only three hits in the game, while striking out seven and walking no one.
Kiana Myers was the losing pitcher for the Johnsonburg girls as she gave up just six hits, walked six and struck out one.
